And it's not bad to use that root note. Ofcourse not. But I noticed that intermediates and beginners tend to revolve around one set pattern for a certain chord or scale. Doing these excercises will open your eyes to more approaches of certain sc...(more)

24017.
I recommend that those who are knowledgeable on the scales and modes but only to a limited extent look at this. It is the first step to having the entire fretboard open to you so that you can become more comfortable with staying away fr...(more)

Hello all,
I was flipping through the book "Serious Electric Bass" by Joel Di Bartolo and found one lesson that I find to be very useful. This is good for those who already have knowledge of the scales and modes but feel like they only have may...(more)

I was messing around trying new ways to practice polyrhythms and discovered these excercises. I found them to be very useful in terms of changing up the rhythm and learning to break away from the obvious and audible beat of the drummer (If for e...(more)

Sometimes I see people play with their thumb completely over the neck. I was told this is a style of play but not a very ergonomic one.
I don't think I could play that way period! It is very limiting to me.

I realize that not everyone's body is the same. The overall point is to have your fingers balanced in strength and independence.
I generally have the head pointing at 10-11ish (45 degree angle). When I sit the angle goes down. I generally have...(more)

This thread is about a left hand fretting technique which makes pulling off and left-handed articulation of a note with the pinky much easier.
The best position for your bass to be in is high. Adjust the strap so that the bass is barely hangin...(more)

That's interesting. Standing alone the diminished 4th is pretty dark. But it could sound like not a dark thing depending on what other chords you are using.
But I guess Pete tried doing that at church lol

I noticed you said it didn't make sense when you tried to throw in other notes but the root. Did it not make sense in terms of tone or rhythm? If it is the rhythm, I would try and listen to how the song is sung to get a good feel for the rhythm,...(more)

That's hilarious. I always thought that the diminished chord sounded dark but kept that to myself. It's amusing to see that its considered by some as the "devil's chord" if what you say is true.

Never played for a church chorus before but I know people who have. I would say play what makes sense in the song by using what is in the chord.
I know that most people will revolve around the root, third, and 5th. Try that for starters, get t...(more)

Haha yeah he really makes it try to seem like it. He is sort of a pompous a-- but a nice dude at the same time. He is nuts. He's one of those guys who can't stop pacing around.
I actually have 2 teachers. One plays drums and the other plays pra...(more)

Here's another tip I learned yesterday - masters become great because they constantly are nitpicky about their playing and ask themselves questions. They then try to find answers to those questions and practice extremely slowly. I mean EXTREMELY...(more)

You have a point. Going into basic theory may not be so bad though. I would atleast learn the difference between minor and major qualities and certain intervals.
Or if theory is too much...just learn them in shapes (how they are on the fretboar...(more)

I would say first learn your scales and modes. When I first started playing without using tabs or playing famous riffs I used scales and modes as a guide. After a while you won't even think in terms of scales and modes but you will think in char...(more)

Yeah. I see what you and Dave mean. Normally doing that with a fretted bass using those fingers is no problem but with a fretless you have to hit the exact spot so your pitch might be a little off doing this.
I was playing around just now to s...(more)

Thinking in terms of polyrhythms can allow you to create some really entrancing stuff. This simple lesson will include an example and explanation of a simple 3 note progression that repeats every beat and accents will be made every 4 frets. You ...(more)

Yes we are odd. My GF doesn't understand why I have bass as my primary instrument over guitar. She thinks guitar sounds more beautiful I guess.
But I guess not everyone doesn't understand what it feels like to really lay down a sick groove. It...(more)
