I've found the upright bass section pretty helpful, and got some good advice there. There are some cranks, as you'd expect in any large online community, but overall, I think that there is value in the site, especially from the moderators in the...(more)

I've been looking all over to replace my old one, as it would be ideal for a band I've just joined. None seem available! :(

I just thought I'd pop in and note that "standards" in this context means something a little different than its usual meaning, which is "songs from the great American songbook:" Cole Porter, Ellington, et al. There's rock standards, jazz standar...(more)

I had the opportunity to hear the Yellowjackets at Birdland with Felix Pastorius on bass; Bob Mintzer mentioned that 30 years previous he shared the stage with Felix's father, and so had come "full circle." I brought my two daughters to hear the...(more)

I can't post any pics now, as my camera is busted. It looks just like the ones you see on the interweb, though, when you search for one. Except I got a great deal on it, so although it was in mint condition, I didn't pay what new ones go for the...(more)

Glad that my old Godin is still making music with you. Yes, the new one has synth output, but I won't be putting that to use any time soon. The tone controls are different, too, and I have to figure them out.

After playing my Azola Acoustic Baby Bass and an Ibanez Roadmaster, I finally ordered a replacement for my old Godin fretless. It arrived today, and I'm delighted to say it's like an old friend. I'm also glad to see that AB got an upgrade, bec...(more)

Mo, you're right, there is very little to say. And yes, I grieve with Norway, although how can we understand such a terrible loss, and because of a disordered mind?

There are many fine musicians from Turkey who play a fusion of Middle Eastern music and jazz -- glad to hear there is one more. I'm very fond of an album I own by Rabih al-Khalid, the oud player, called "The Sultan's Picnic" and features Charlie...(more)

Follow-up: All the band members want to do another show ASAP. We'll probably put on a fundraiser for the folks in Japan who have been so hard hit.

So I've been running a club for kids at the (tiny) high school where I teach history, and we put on a show with performances by the jazz group I direct, and two student rock groups. The kids blew everyone away. The second group ended their set w...(more)

Mo, I'm glad you caught that point. Perhaps one has to be of a certain age to know what "stacked" means in some contexts. My mom used to call it "having a nice figure." :)

Not to sound overly sensitive, but if I've taken the time and care to write a lesson for you, and you don't like -- enough to give it a rating of "1" -- then perhaps you could drop me a line explaining how to improve it. If it's something like "...(more)

My Eden Traveler looks like it will be replaced soon, and I'm considering using my Line 6 Bass Pod as a pre-amp with a power amp. I rather like the Pod -- it's very quiet and light. I also own it already, which saves $$! But I will likely need m...(more)

Every bit as good as I expected, and better than before in parts. Very strong performance, and well received. Now we need lights and fog!

I was very sorry to see that Steve Azola is closing up shop. I have been the lucky owner of one of his wonderful basses, and now, it seems, he will not be building them, at least for awhile. The instrument he made for me, an acoustic Baby Bass, ...(more)
