I will play without one if needed, but I like to feel the sound pressure of having an amp nearby. I usually face it backward so as not to interfere with the vocals or all the percussion and grand piano that's often out in front of me.

You know, Dave M has a point. I hardly listen to music on any device unless it's XM radio while I drive or stuff I'm lifting at work. I usually play the tunes in my head, and, OH, it seems I never have a quiet moment between my ears...
