Pain is a sign of a problem. STOP playing until you find out what causes it, and then correct it. Physical pain can lead to serious problems. What you *really* mean is that to get better you have to overcome MENTAL pain.

I am 50. I have played stringed instruments for 35 years, including the violin and viola. But BASS was and always will be my only true love. Learn and use a good technique. Always warm up, and don't overdo it. You might last 35 years, too.

I advise reading the manufacturers instructions on strings. Follow the designe parameters. For a RIC, they suggested cutting the strings a two inches longer, and thne wrapping the two inches around the tuning peg. It looks nice when you finish...(more)

The Doc gave me some Vioxx, and so far the pills are doing zilcho. I still wake up with stiff fingers, especially the left index finger. Funny, though: when I play they aren't stiff anymore! doc said to check back if the pills don't work, and I ...(more)

Learn to play some recognizable tunes like "Happy Birthday", "The Star Spangled Banner", or some Beatles melodies. Melodies in general are a fine thing to learn. A very easy song is "What do we do with a Drunken Sailor?" When someone asks you to...(more)

Whether or not you have a teacher, the desire to play well must be intrinsic. The desire to play well will seek all that is necessary to do so. Zen it. Will it. Do it. Enjoy it. Keep the Beat. Stay in Tune. Never Quit.

Lessons from a competent teacher are a good investment. Not only do they teach you a good technique, but they also provide feedback which speeds up progress.
