Skill allows you to explore theory. It's a chicken-egg thing. Learn skills and learn theory at the same time. You will be better off in the long run.

RIC is THE bassman's bass. I have a 1980 year Model 4001. It stays in tune, plays great, sounds better than great. And NO, mine is NOT for sale! BUY a RIC.

Instead of thinking "do I HAVE to learn to read msuic", why not think "GOOD, I GET to learn to read music!" If you are serious about being a musican, preferably a BASS PLAYER (!!), then you will WANT to learn whatever it takes to be at least a G...(more)

I may yet come back to my (RIC) senses. But not yet! I love the torment of having to decide between a Rickenbacker and a Warwick! But never fear: I am NEVER getting rid of the RIC. I see that you sold a Hofner once. I got to play one in a music ...(more)

RIC is the tops in body shape and overall cache. Warwicks are so confortable--very silky and ergonomic. Hard for me to decide anymore which I prefer.

It has been interesting to read the comments of AB members on this issue. I agree with Marcus. The TB site is more active, but the people here at AB are a closer bunch, and in my very humble opinion, a better bunch in terms of talent, experience...(more)

The good thing about memorizing music is that you can embellish it with 'feel', and it takes on a life of its own as intended by the composer. Solo pieces are by nature melodic, and Bach is SO beautiful to play. The chords just roll one to anoth...(more)

Mods are a good idea. Simply post 'the rules' and adhere to them. I hate all this politico-religioso-non sequitir crapola. Let's just make music! Keep the Beat. Stay in Tune. Never Quit.

I played live on TV in Florida. We rehearsed the songs on Wednesday, and played live on Sunday. Following the conductor AND reading music is a challenge. I had him in my peripheral vision all the time following his baton, and my focused eyes on ...(more)

Theory is global to music, and not specific to the bass. If you learn THEORY, then you can apply it to the bass. I object to the idea that 'learning finger-patterns' for scales, modes, and chord arpeggios is 'learning theory'. This is total BS. ...(more)

Determination is EVERYTHING. No matter who you are, 'talent' is actually the evidence of persistent dedication. Keep the Beat. Stay in Tune. Never Quit.

Use all four fingers to pluck, and the count is even simpler. Begin with the pinky on 'one', and end with the index finger on 'four'. You can really fly with this method.

I'm a CPA at a college on Chicago. I made $20 playing fiddle at a wedding once--- so am I still an 'amateur'?

Just loud enough to not break the windows, wake up the dead in the cemetery three blocks away, or to get kicked out by the landlord.

We all know that "it's how you sound" that really counts-- so good luck to this player. The problem with limited technique is that it limits the upward potential of achievement. I have eight fingers, and I use all of them to play the bass. I wou...(more)

Bach is challenging. You gotta be kick-ass to even get through some of the cello suites. Bits and pieces of some of the suites are are quite easy, though. Now get this for hard to do: "Flight of the Bumble-bee" (I got the music today--might be a...(more)

My first instrument was a marching drum when I was 11. I started playing the violin at age 18. Switched to the bass at age 34. Been playing bass for 14 years now. Never played bass in a band, but played violin on live tv for a few years. Felt I ...(more)

I'd rather my fingers perform all the acrobatics--on the strings. But, I'm an old guy... I think it's all about the music. But then again, showmanship... nothing wrong with that!
