Also, it's best to tune down lower than the note
you desire and tune back up to pitch.
You will get less string slipping that way.

Hello there Scott,
Yes, the traditional modes are based on the major
scale (Ionian Mode) and apply to not only the
relative minor (Aeolian Mode) but to the other 5
modes created by moving the half steps.
