Gary Smejkal studied music formally at Cleveland State University and played with several Cleveland area bands in the late seventies. Nearly three decades later, Gary Smejkal has become increasingly visible on the Southern New Hampshire music scene, including recent guest appearances with Rich Fauteux and the Kieran McNally Band. He appeared in the March 2006 issue of Bass Player Magazine.

He is currently in the studio recording his first solo CD, LIKE A MOTH TO THE FLAME, which features all original arrangements in the jazz fusion genre. He is joined in the studio with a new roster of musicians collectively referred to as the CARBON BASED LIFE FORMS which includes Kevin Crowley (drums and percussion), Kevin Federico (keyboards and guitar), Rob Jackson (guitar), and Adam Trull (trumpet).
