Ken Cooper, Sydney Australia, originally from Melbourne
I'm a grandfather, started playing in the early 1960's in rock bands. Learned how to read & ended up in Sydney playing in clubs. The acts walk in, talk through their charts for 10 minutes, then you are expected to make it sound like the recording session from where it was transcribed.

That also makes for good ear training, so I'm pretty good at 'lugging' along behind singers with only the key known. You need to listen to lots of different styles of music to do that. But the good thing is that chord progressions in western music are ususally pretty rational. Practice tips!! 1. Find a mate who plays a guitar or keyboard 2. Make up your own lines to sheet music chords. Regards -- Ken
