This is a useful piece of software, and should be on anyone's download list simply for it's capabilities as a music player -- but it still has a few features that need to be included (Windows Media and Real Player support for one), but most of the problems with VLC are legal issues between the Videolan group and various members of the video and music industry. Microsoft and Real keep their lips shut about their own software to stifle competition, so until they come around...

There are some crashes in the software, as is expected with any piece of software that is beta -- luckily enough, they provide a "stable" version of the software without the latest and greatest features for those who don't want to deal with crashes. But overall, even the beta crashes less than Windows Media Player, if that is indicative of the quality of VLC

Features:
It plays every codec, and it streams many codecs over a network or the internet. Imagine being able to stream a DVD across a network so that everyone in your house can watch it at the same time. This badass player will play damn near any codec you throw at it, but Mac OS X users will be sad to know that it will not play WMV3 encoded files yet -- and everyone will be sad to know that it will not play Real Audio or Video (the worst codec in the world, imho).

There are a few rare kinks in the Mac OS X version of the software, but no more than windows media player or winamp -- and the software is constantly being revised.
Ease of Use:
The interface of VLC has been one of the cleanest interfaces for many of the older versions, and this version is no different. There are keystrokes controls for people who are into that sort of thing, an intuitive button panel for people just looking to play their videos and go one with life, and there are neatly organized menu options for people looking to use some of the more complicated streaming features of VLC.
