Limited number of basses to compare to... but compared favorably to a consignment BC Rich in terms of tone and quality of construction. The main limitation of this bass is the controls, which can easily be overcome with an offboard preamp (I use a sansamp programmable) or wiring harness kit. Excellent value for both the beginner and intermediate-level player, and possibly even as a backup bass for more experienced performers.

Made in China. 35" Scale, 24 fret Mahogany neck is constructed using Mahogany and Maple Stringers. Wings are Mahogany with natural finish. Controls are very simplistic, one Volume and Single Tone Control for Each Passive Humbucker (ceramic dual coils, 15K bridge &13.5k neck), but the shielded body cavity has plenty of room for customization. Neck seems thin and fast compared to my former fender jazz (comparable to my Schecter and Rob Allen necks). Stout bridge allowing through the body stringing. Much lighter bass than I was expecting for a Peavey. Seems light compared to my Schecter.
One string needs simple intonation adjustment. Fast neck. Easy to play. Some rumors of inconsistent quality control on other reviews, but no major issues have surfaced from my try-out in the music store, a day of practice, and 4-hour gig.
My bandmates are impressed with how it cuts through the mix (50s-60s Rock and Motown) and the variety of tones that I can dial in via my Sansamp coming through my Phil Jones Flightcase (a very transparent hifi amp). Impressive B string. Given the non-intuitiveness and limitations of the Vol-Vol-Tone-Tone configuration, I recommend either playing through such an outboard preamp or making some easy modifications with a passive kit. Practically no noise on humbuckers when turned up 100% volume.
Have only owned for several days, but my impression is that this is a simple, solid bass that will hold up as my primary rock and roll bass as an intermediate bass player. Tuning seems to fluctuate more widely than on my other basses, but held steady during first 4-hour performance. You'll need to buy strap locks.
It was love for the first sight. And she didn't let me down, gave everything I've ever wanted from a bass, and all for an incredibly low price. So I think I'm married and settled down:)
Yup after these long years, I can but confirm.

Grind basses are made in Vietnam, so watch out for the actual quality of the bass, NEVER mailorder any, always take a close look on the body!! You can pick really finely built ones, but you can find less finely built ones as well;)
The selection of woods make this bass look like a dream, It has a high-end bass look and feel as well, quite heavy, but the neck is actually very slim and thus this bass is VERY easy to play.
The natural finish can be easily damaged, but this is the price you have to pay for the beauty...
The two passive humbucks that come with it have huge sound.
Neck-thru design, string thru body (it's a thru friend for sure:)
two volume and two tone knobs, nothing special there
So, now I have managed to fix her up with two EMG DCs operated by two 9v batteries, so now it is a 18v active.
Huge relief was the both the pickups and the electronics along with the batteries could be put in without having to make any modifications whatsoever to the body itself.
As I've mentioned before, this baby is extremely fun to play...the neck is slim, I put the action quite low, so my left hand can just fly thru the frets like a jet:)
And the
"scooped out area in the lower wing doubles the distance between the strings and the body making it much easier for slap style playing or high-fret access"
Now this is completely off the record now, bit boy, do I love the sound of these EMGs. The fact that now I have my dream bass for less then half the price it could have cost me makes this purchase well worth the additional work.
it is amazing how EMGs fit and contribute to the souond of this bass.
It has lost some of its natural all-round qualities, but nothing a good preamp can't fix.
And the slap sound is just incredible.
The low B comes virtually alive...
I only touched the rod after I bought her (6 months before), and set the action, and I haven't had any problems since then, it keeps the tuning etc...
it just seems to remain intact, the controls the hardware seem to remain in perfect condition...
the only thing I can say is that you have to be careful with the body, because of the natural finish...
that's all,
Still after years of usage and gigs it is completely healthy and intact (apart from a single scratch I myself caused when once drunk I have literally knocked myself out, after hiting myself in the mouth with my own bass:)
I think this bass is an affordable stock version of the cirrus. but for it's price, it's a good bass.

It has a neck through body design. Maple and mahogony for the neck and imbuya for the body. The passive humbuckers sound good, but it takes a bit of time to adjust the volume and tone controls to get the sound you want.
It has a nice almost thin neck. the frets feel a bit wierd though.
So far, no damage to the body, neck or finnish.
