I looked at a Boss and a Digitec before buying the 708 and i think it has the best overall features and duriabality (which why i chose it). I would buy this pedal again if it were ever destroyed or stolen. The only thing i would change is the the distortion it needs to be heaver. My favorite features are the built in drum mechine and expression pedal, and i cant think of any thing i dont like. GO BUY THIS PEDAL NOW!!!
Model Year: 2000
Price: $90.00
Where Obtained: ontrack recording studio
Features:
It has digital/manual knobs and foot pedeals (two switch one expression). It is both AC and battery powered so it's realy portable. I cant think of anything it dosent include espicially for it's size, except i wish it took 9V batts instead of AA's. The whole thing is digital,no tubes, it does have a very nice amp simulator though.
Sound Quality:
I use a P-bass run into a small 40W Peavy amp with this pedal most of the time, i play mostly blues and rock, and this pedal performs great for both. I've let a few frends try it out and it plays great for any style (some of them play metal, classical, country). I once owned a Zoom 506-2 and it totally sucked when it came to durabality compaired to the 708. One of the best things about the 708 is it dosent make a bunch of racket when u play. I think that the best effect on the whole pedal is the whaa, It is extremly full.
Ease of Use:
The 708 is programiable (*very* programable) It is extreemly easy to program, modify, or temporrarly modify and of it's patches. Its really easy to get a good sound with the 708, easyier than any unit ive ever used.
Durability:
The 708 is is very reliable and can stand being played for hours on end without ever missing a beat. Other than there 500 series pedals zoom makes very reliable products, and this pedal for one is very well built. I'd be willing to bet u could kick it arround the room for a while and it would still work.

The only reason I'm giving this unit a "4" is because I know that better effects units are out there. That said, I don't know if you'll find a better unit for the money. I was looking for something that would give me a broad range of effects to try without hurting my wallet too much, and I got much more than I hoped for. I would strongly recommend this unit to anyone who's not sure if effects are for them, and who wants to get a little taste of everything in one unit.
Price: $38.00
Where Obtained: Ebay
Features:
Has lots of features - two foot switches to toggle through the effects library, easy to use knobs to quickly adjust effects parameters. It's got a nice expression pedal, something I didn't see on some of the comparably priced multi-effects processors. It uses four AA batteries, but has an AC-jack, which I use most of the time (AC adapter isn't included). One of my favorite features is the built-in drum machine; some of the rhythms are a little lame, but it's a lot more fun than just using a metronome, and more practical (metronome is also included). The onboard tuner is nice, too, to help stay in tune while practicing.
Sound Quality:
I use this with all of my basses - fretted, fretless, 5-string. Some effects, such as "fretless" or "jacop," sound best if you're already using a fretless bass; there are so many effects that I don't have a use for most of them. Usually I just play it with headphones, because the amp models in the unit sound better than my practice amp. I've read some complaints about noise with this unit, but I'm glad I ignored them, because it works fine for me. It seems to work well with most styles of music.
Ease of Use:
This is a very easy unit to use. You can use the small buttons to fine tune your effects, but the knobs are great - they don't look as much like technology, and it's much faster to just give the knob a quick turn than to keep punching a button until you reach the parameter you want. The instructions are pretty clear if you can't figure it out by just playing with it.
Durability:
I treat all of my equipment pretty gently, so I'm not sure how much of a pounding it could take. I don't foresee ever having a problem with its durability, though.

Its pretty cool that you can get all these different effects and such but its hard to use them because you cant switch to a nice clean bass very easily, If your starting out buying effects i would recomend this but if you can afford it you should buy seperate pedals instead, That is what im beginning to do
Model Year: 2002
Price: $180.00 Canadian (new)
Features:
Sound Quality:
It is fuzzy sometimes but you can control that by adjusting the volume settings
Ease of Use:
Its alright for the money i guess, but its hard to go from using an effect to clean bass, I think that is where this thing is lacking the most, If there was a switch that would always switch back to clean bass this thing would be way better
Durability:
The thing is made of plastic. I babied it and still after a year the connections began to fail, ther is no way i would trust this thing on stage

Where Obtained: JB Music Store (Authorized Dealer)
Features:
Been Using this for a while now. Its handy especially in gigs with AC outlet problems. The AA batteries are a cool idea. And they last loooong! .
Sound Quality:
One drawback though, Most settings are preset. Though I was able to create the tone I like. But I am still looking for a flanger sweep controlable by its exp pedal
Ease of Use:
Still a problem in patch switching. Just like other floor units. Though a bassist dont do a lot of patched within a song. However, what then If it calls for?
Durability:
Not so much durable. Mine front panel is broken. Just patched it up with a thick transparent adhesive tape. Been soldering its jack for quite some time now.

Features:
AC powered,or battery.. with tons of effects. The effects can be customized to your liking. good for screwing around with multiple effects. has nice drum jam feature where you can jam to many different drum beats. its a little fragile and i dont think its suitable for a gig. lets you explore many options, but not the greatest quality.
Ease of Use:
Takes some time to learn the different effects

Dont play live gigs with this it broke once on me...where the guitar cord plugs in plastic

Sound Quality:
I use this pedal with my epiphone bass and my crate 100w amp. its suitable for any style i can think of. most effects are great and you can modify them for yourself
Ease of Use:
Its not hard to start up and get playing right away but youre gonna have to fiddle around with the manual to get it to do the exact thing you want it to do.
Durability:
Doesnt seem that durable made of plastice but it should hold up fine as long as you dont jump on it

Overall this is a solid pedal. Not the BEST. A POD Line 6 would blow this thing outta the water, but for an average musician. This thing is hard to beat. Great price, and you get all kinds of goodies along with the effects. If the distortion effects were alot better along with the wah, I would have rated this 5 stars.
Model Year: 2002
Price: $150.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Music123.com
Features:
I knew ZERO about pedals untill I bought this thing. I highly advise before you go pushing buttons READ THE MANUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then play with the pedal's features. With 3 knobs to modify each effect there are all kinds of varieties. I just wish it had more variety to modify certain effects like distortion. The pedal is AC powered or battery powered. I HIGHLY advise just buy the plug with it. Don't waste cash on batteries! Also, the DRUM MACHINE ROCKS!!!!!!! For a multi-effects I didn't expect a spectacular drum machine in it but I got an above average one and I was VERY pleased with it! Beats metronome! Also has a built in tuner. So toss the old one out!
Sound Quality:
I use this pedal with a Jackson 4 string and a Hartke Kickback 12. I play usually heavy metal, in the range of Metallica, and so on. I think for like jazz, funk, and mainstream music it would fit the bill perfectly. I needed heavy distortion and wah combo for some of Metallica's / my own licks and I couldn't get it with this. Overall it's okay. Like my favorite effect is POWER because it adds a HUGE punch to your bass. As for that drum machine the variety the pedal give's is excellent from funk to thrash metal! The amp simulator has only 8 types, but once again this is more than what I bargained for in a multieffects..... awsome awsome awsome sim's for a multi pedal, it can make your amp have a warm cabinet sound or a more of a trebly punch with the effect your using. This works well with the POWER effect in my opinion. Also, if you play with pick you gain alot more from this pedal because it has several pick effects to give you better tone.
Ease of Use:
It's programmable and to be honest I don't know much about patches, so I won't get into it. About the sound though, of course its gonna take alot of fiddling to find the right sound for YOU. I mean theres no avoiding that! I think once you read the manual once or twice you will get a firm grip of the pedal.
Durability:
It's not built to be dropped or smashed, so don't do that. Also, when you use the expression pedal don't push down too hard, you might smash it LoL! It can take a beating but nothing real extreme I think I know 2 guitarists who own zooms and have no problems with them physically so they are pretty durable over all.

What i found out that the simpler the effect on this, the better, because there are some KRAZY effects...It has a noise Suppressor so its very quiet and makes swiching from Distortion to a Chorus very even.

The BFX-708 is fun for rehearsel and home studio stuff, but there are better units out there if you are looking for some crazy sound. At $129.00 it is a good tool for practice. You would be better off getting dedicated equipment instead of a multi unit.
Model Year: 2000
Price: $129.00 (new)
Where Obtained: American Musical Supply
Features:
The BFX-708 has many pre-set effects which can be augmented to suit your needs. It has drum patterns, metronome, tuner, expression pedal, 6 second sampling, a stereo output jack, 8 amp simulator and ac/dc capable.
Sound Quality:
The sound you get from the BFX-708 is OK. Use with headphones is a great plus (no amp required). The unit records well enough. The stereo effects are neat when using headphones or recording in stereo. It has compression but don't leave your dedicated compressor at home.
Ease of Use:
The BFX-708 is ready to go as soon as you install 4 AA batteries. Plug in your bass, connect to your amp, turn unit on, turn the "OUTPUT" to 3/4 full pick an "AMP SIMULATION", choose an effect and rock on.
Durability:
Although the BFX-708 is fun to mess with, I don't use it in a live situation. Dedicated stomp boxes or a rack unit is the way to go live. Bending over, turning knobs, clicking through to the desired effect is not what I want to be doing on stage if front of a live audiance.

I really love some of the sounds i can get out of this thing. I use my basses and guitar on it. When I use the guitar I usually use my danelectro death metal distortion as well and very often use an electric toothbrush or shaver to vibrate the strings combined with various effects such as phaser, flanger, ring mod etc to get insane sounds. I'm not sure if I like it better for guitar or bass. It's one of the easiest units I've used. Many of the effects are extremely programmable and the expression pedal is very nice. Creating and editing patches is as simple as fiddling with the parameters and hitting the store button.
Durability:
I've used it live several times and I did have a problem with it recently, something wrong with the internal wiring or something but I got it fixed. It's plastic so its not too durable.

Where Obtained: Ace Music, Sheffield
Features:
Loads of effects, not much money. Nice idea of instant adjustment knobs for certain parameters. Integral expression pedal. Could do with more patch pedals (like the 3030 player for guitar) to allow a better soundscape to be more easily produced. Drum machine and sampler built in. Adapter not included as standard.
Sound Quality:
Used with Aria Active and Fender Jazz Active. Good, clean sounds. Massive range of compression available and some good pre amp type options.
Ease of Use:
Quite easy to create patches, good sounds spring to hand easily. GREAT sounds take some work.
Durability:
The unit has been perfectly reliable so far, but the plastic construction (hence low price - 90!!!) is not ideal. The expression pedal feels quite flimsy when compared to my Morley Wah.

This unit's best feature is the drum machine. Regrettably, once you shut it off, it "forgets" the level you had the drums set to play and it blows your ears out. It eats batteries pretty quickly so the external power supply is required.
Sound Quality:
The sound quality is pretty good and does not add any negative influence to your sound - unless that's what you want it to do!
Ease of Use:
It's pretty easy to set up, but I find myself sitting down on the floor with the manual programming the thing as it's complex.

Overall... I love this box. I had read loads of mixed reviews of it so I decided to just try it out for myself in the shop, and I'm glad I did. I went in prepared to be disappointed and was overwhelmed by the sound. I know people will complain about the fact its plastic, but in that case put your money where your mouth is and buy seperate effects boxes and leave this bargain for the rest of us!
Model Year: 2001
Price: $100.00 GBP (new)
Where Obtained: Cranes Music, Cardiff, Wales
Features:
There's loads of reviews of this box here so you should know what this beast has. It has the works, even a cheesy drum machine (which for practice is fab, and I've even used it for recording when I've been hard-pressed to find drum loops) and it excells as a tuner as well. The analogue controls are handy and work well. The expression pedal's great as well. And so's everything else :) I've seen people complain about the fact that you have to get a specific AC adaptor and can't just use a four-way combination adaptor because if one of the other connectors hits your lead it'll reset the box. I have two words for you: "Gaffa tape". Sorted.
Sound Quality:
Sound quality's great. I've had this thing hooked up to decent amps, crap amps, headphones and straight into a hard-drive recorder and the sound's great, especially for the price. The DSPs run at about 32kHz which is the same as one DAT standard so it's a nice crisp output. Some effects are a bit squiffy and some just plain bizarre (but great for Pink Floyd noises), but most are fine provided you don't attempt to turn up every setting to 'max'. Unless, of course, you want to copy my one patch which is set up to deliberately annoy the teenage boy next door :)
Ease of Use:
Very easy to use. The manual's comprehensive and may seem daunting at first but it took me about 5 minutes to work out exactly what to do to create my own patches. The analogue knobs make it easy to set the parameters for the patches, and when you're out of editing mode you can fiddle with the knobs (oo-er) on the fly to make instant changes to some of the settings. This is the same as what the expression pedal can do, just a little less accessable (but more precise).
Durability:
It's fine provided you're not planning on leaping on it. Sure, it's plastic, but that's not a problem. The pedal and foot switches are well built and it'll stand up to knocks.

I am not an expert, but from my point of view, for beginner and intermediate bass player, this effect pedal is very good. It works with AC or batteries. You get a large red LED screen easy to read, on top of the effects you get a tube amplifier sound simulation, the unit provides also a set of drum rythms with adjustable tempo, a bass tuner and some others stuff I have not used yet. Another interesting thing is that you may create your own effect by ajusting the level of each basic effect and store it in memory, then call it back when you need it.
Sound Quality:
I use a CARLSBRO SHERWOOD amplifier (100W) and a VALLEY & BLUES 4 string bass. You may play any musical style with this pedal effect.
Ease of Use:
It is very easy to use already stored patches. It takes a little bit to learn about specifics fuctions.

Compared to other units I have tried and used, this one is the best. Mainly because of the myriad of clean sounds and its adjustability. The amp simulator is very nice and drum machine is great for practicing and it has and excellent tuner that can be used with 4,5 or how ever many strings you're using. This unit kicks a-- whether you're plugged into headphones or a big amp. The 708 is well worth the money spent and I recommend it.
Price: $140.00 (new)
Where Obtained: American Music Supply
Features:
The 708 has 30 preset patches and 30 user patches. Many of them are useful and some are excellent like the vintage phase, the melody, the 'Alone', 'Chorus' and the 'Jaco'. Each patch can be adjusted further by the use of the three analog parameter knobs. The drum machine is great for practicing and it is adjustable for 45 different styles and it has adjustable tempos. There are 4 different amp simulator settings and all have very nice tonal variation. The 708 also has a 6 second sampler for recording bass riffs and you can play them back at half speed. It has a great tuner that is easy to use and easy to see. Uses the same AC adapter as the 506 so I didn't have to purchase another one. Takes four AA batteries. The on-off switch is a great idea.
Sound Quality:
I use Fender instruments, a four string Cal P-Bass, a five string Jazz with active electronics and a Mexican Jazz fretless. I use a Park 25 watt practice amp and an Ampeg SVT III amp. The BFX-708 is well suited for many styles of music. It has many useful patches and if you don't like one there are 59 others to choose from and all can be adjusted using the parameter knobs and amp simulators. What I believe to be its strongest selling point - it is noiseless! It is one of the cleanest effects I have used to date whether using a big rig or a small practice amp or headphones. This unit puts the Zoom 506 to shame because it is extremely noisy by comparison.
Ease of Use:
The unit is programmable and the combinations and types of adjustments are endless. Like many of the high tech toys we have available today, if you don't spend some time reading the directions and learning how to use it you won't get the most out of it. And this one has a lot of possibilities.

The 708 has a heavy duty thick plastic case and expression pedal. It seems to be sturdy enough although I am not a stomper.

My favourite aspect of this unit is that it has such a good range of effects, The worst aspect of it is that you can't use compression and distortion at the same time and you can only use one type of modulation at one time.
Model Year: 2000
Where Obtained: Tuba Talk (Watford
Features:

Sound Quality:
I use this unit with a fender P-bass and an encore 4 string bass ( i don't know the actual model number)and a carlsbro amp. I play classic rock, punk, hard rock and thrash metal through this pedal. It has excellent compression and gain effects, but i still think that with the addition of a few tubes these could be made so nuch better, but his would up the price lots.
Ease of Use:
This unit is programmable and very easy to use. I found out how to make my own effects almost as soon as i got the unit. You can choose from an equaliser, a distortion or compression, a modulation, a reverb and a main patch volume all at once or choose a single effect and turn the others off. Each effect is fully adjustable with large knobs, so it is easy to adjust.
Durability:
I have gigged this unit only once and it performed brilliantly. It is made fairly robustly, but the top side is made from plastic so it may not be too strong. I havn't tested it that far!!!

My overall opinion is that zoom is a very good manufacturer and if u cant afford a better processor for over 150$ then i think this one is for u!
Price: $140.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Sam Ash
Features:
Its both ac operated and battery powered it has many different distortions i think 60 all together u can program 30 and theres 30 preset ones. its got a tube setting on it
Sound Quality:
I use with it a peavey mark 4 400 watt bass head with a home made custom built cabinet with a 20" speaker. i can play jus bout any musical style with it it has setting for blues and jazz and rock whatever u enjoy playing. the sound quality is excellent compared to the other stuff i used and it is not noisy at all in fact one of the quietest ive had. most effects are good on there but there are a few worthless ones i will admit that!
Ease of Use:
Yeah its programmable and very easy to edit or create patches. Not a lot of messin around with it to have a good sound u may need to mess with it to get the right sound ur lookin for thats bout all.
Durability:
Yeah its very reliable i rely on it each use. and im sure zoom makes some good equipment and its got pretty good construction to it what else can i say catch them if u can ZOOM!
