I was looking to not effect my bass sound only to make the enhancement in tonal range of the instrument. makes the amp sound bigger is worth the green and replacement is not a question. the worst aspect is if you do not take time to set the unit your asking for poor performance. I was pleased with the way this unit allows me to get more tonal sound from my bass with out effecting the nature of the volume. A must hear.
Model Year: 2001
Price: $69.00
Where Obtained: Music go around
Features:
With a single foot switch and four control knobs it would be easy to not notice the micro switches on the back. One micro switch for DI and another for passive active slection. Both ac and bat-powered. It excites the sound of your bass giving the sonic impression of there being more sonic tone. It will not make a crapy bass sound any better just excited and big crap.
Sound Quality:
I use a washburn taurus t-24 or a S-101 deluxe p- bass thru a fender rumble bass 100 or a traynor b-50. playing various styles this unit works best with the main grove or soloing. noise free it not a sound effects as a sound enhancement which it dose well. Takes some practice to hear and adjust and the room enviroment effects what you hear so re-adjustment is required when changing venues.
Ease of Use:
Not patches which would be cool if your could, say save setting for venues you commonly play. some fiddling required as decribed above. It is vary common sence to use no engineering degree just a pair of ears for tone.
Durability:
Steel housing protects the guts and had a plug socket come loose from the board. gets knocked around if not put on the floor right away then gets kicked and stumbled over. This company should make a unit that attaches to the inside of the bass guitar.

To be honest I was a little under-whelmed as the previous reviews were all 5 stars. I think my disappointment comes from the fact that there is very little variation in the sound regardless of how much you fiddle with each frequency cut-off and blend combination. I have to remind myself that it cost less than 100 so I can't expect miracles. However there is a real improvement to the sound so I would replace if lost.
Model Year: 2005
Price: $125.00 85 (new)
Where Obtained: GAK Online (UK)
Features:
Two sets of controls (frequency cut-off and blend), one set for low frequencies (Big Bottom) and the other for high frequencies (Aural Exciter). AC or battery powered. Also has DI out.
Sound Quality:
As this is designed to improve tone then sound quality is good. I use it with Dean Edge Q5 and Roland DB500 amp - which sounded good beforehand but have been improved by the addition of the Bass Xciter. Big Botttom seems to have the most noticable effect, the Aural Exciter effect is very subtle. The unit certainly makes the B-string sound much stronger.
Ease of Use:
Very easy - there are good instructions which explain a bit of the detail behind the technology which are well worth reading.
Durability:
A bit too soon to tell - but I had to be sent three units before I got one that worked properly.

It's a great tool for any bassist. It's not expensive either, so just buy one!
Where Obtained: Local dealer
Features:
Controls for Big Bottom and Aural Enhancer + blend for both. Single footswitch with LED, and pad switch for active basses. It's got all the features I need in a pedal like this. It also has an XLR DI output.
Sound Quality:
Sound quality is very good. Low noise levels, and responsive pots. I use it to reinforce my rig, but it's not a permanent fixture. I find it helps a lot if I get overrun by load guitars, or if I just want a slight boost in the sound. It's also good for when you use other peoples rigs and don't want to mess with their amp settings.
Ease of Use:
It's dead simple. Just turn the knobs until you find the sweetspots, and you're done.
Durability:
It's got a metal casing and sturdy knobs. No problems with the durability. I've had mine for over a year, and it's showing signs of wear but still going strong.

Features:
The box is sturdy with nice led to see if on or off. Can be used as direci DI. Is battery or ac and what's cool is you can use any power source with the correct plug. Has built in ground lift also. Quater ins are plastic may upgrade to nice swithcrafts.
Sound Quality:
I use this with my Mesa rig and all my basses. This unit will help any rig any style. This isn't A BBE it's Big Bottom effect is tuned to bass with the Aural enhancer able to bring out the crispness. This will make any rig sound huge even small combos. Blows a BBE away hands down. It's quiet with no noise. It was reviewed in Bass Player and I agree you have to have one. It makes that much difference.
Ease of Use:
Very easy to use great manual and just use your ears.
Durability:
This thing is built like a tank. Aphex is an innovater in quality studio effects. Used for 1.5 years with no problems. Just needs better quaters but that's an easy fix.
