Excellent Book, I learned a hell lot from this book. I learned the major scale modes, the arpeggios, fingering technique, and a lot more. The exercises here are pretty good and really works out your fingers. This book is also pretty humorous, and very entertaining to read. The grooves are pretty sweet, and Patrick's method is very easy to understand.

I still refer to this book from time to time, and is always helpful.

A great book. Gives you all the basic scales, playing techniques and comes complete with a CD to help you through the lessons in the text. Even gives you tips on maintenace for your guitar and what to look out for/avoid when choosing a guitar. Gives the reader a basic introduction to reading music, tabs and the fretboard diagrams. Well worth the money and a must for beginners on the bass guitar.

Easy to understand instructions, yes it helps to make a better player, refer to it every time you run a scale, great for all styles beecause it informs you to stay open minded and to learn it all, CD included and helpful to listen to what you're reading, it could only get better with a DVD for visual, favorite aspect was that it doesn't discourage beginners with tech-talk right off the start, worst aspect clumsy glued book spine.

This is the book I should have had when I first started playing. It answers all the questions I ever had about bass playing.

From raw novice to advanced intermediate this book has something for everyone. It has definately helped improve my playing and will continue to do so for years.

The CD makes it easy to learn from the book even if your ability to read music is more than a little limited. Tabs along with notation also helps.

All I can say is buy it, you won't regret it.

Have you seen anything less than 5 stars yet! With good reason. This is without any doubt one of the best instructional resources for beginners, as one of the most versatile for bass players at all skill levels. The musical styles section and accompanying disk are invaluable, especially if you want to keep freshening the palette for Worship within a Praise Band as I do. A bit more detail would be helpful on string muting via the rest stroke or shift of the thumb to the E & A strings.

This book is written by a bass teacher of some note - and it shows through in the content, style and the dconsidered way in which the material is presented. Although the title would lead one to think that this book is only suitable for beginners do not be deceived, Patrick has presented the material in such a way that players of all skill leel can gain from this book. However it would be of most benefit for beginners to intermediate players. The book covers all essential aspectects of bass ownership, from the more mundane how to change the strings to the rather esoteric modes. All of this is done in a light conversational style that is at times humourous, and at times a bit corny - but that only contributes to the enjoyment of the book. Very well written, excellent layout, all of the necessary elements of bass playing, ownership are there. This will become the definitive beginner's guide - and well deserved. Congratulations Patrick on a brilliant book.

I found this book to be the best source of information for people of all levels of playing abilities. I read the book before getting the bass and it made me want to play more. I've been telling my friends about the book and they have been playing for years. They learn new things that didn't know and some has learned to read musical notaion instead of tab. I love this book. Thank you Patrick for writing this book

This is a great instructional book for beginners and a wonderful reference for all levels. This instructional book teaches the basics of bass playing, including position, posture, techniques, and the like. It also teaches basic music, including reading and scales. The book comes with a CD of the author playing all the music included in the book so a reader can hear as well as see the music. Every style of play is covered in this book, with descriptions of the bass player's role in each. Every bass player should read through this book and keep it on their amp for reference. Great book.
