Blues Bass - The Complete Method

by Jon Liebman

(1999) Hal Leonard

Description "The best single source for learning to play the blues for bass?" The question mark is by me, since I do not know all the other books in the field. But, personally I AM in the process of doing it - learning to play blues! Why wouldn't you?

As a complete novice on the bass, I can't really rate the book/cd for any other level, so don't be put off by the fact that I've rated it just for beginners. I've been reading/playing music for many years now but not the guitar and certainly not the bass guitar! I've just got the book but already I can feel a difference in my playing. I think I'm beginning to understand the nature of the blues and hopefully it'll help me along to greater things ;-) It's ideal for beginners as it's produced in tab and notation (you can even learn to read in the bass clef if it's something you couldn't do) as for whether it's any good for more advanced users, I'll tell you later :-) The bottom line, the book/cd are great but as with all tools, it's down to the individual to use them in order to gain anything from them.

This book by Jon Liebman comes from the Hal Leonard series of bass instruction books. Having bought "Walking Bass" from Hal Leonard, I wasn't sure about buying this book. Well, I broke down and bought it. This book is instructional. All lessons are tabbed and in notation; plus each lesson is on the CD that comes with the book. I have always liked playing the blues, but wanted to get better. This book shows you many differnt blues progressions in many different keys and time signature. It also has a great section on turn arounds, plus it ends with some very good bass solos in case you get 12 bars to show off. This book is perfect for my skill level and I believe that it would be valuable to bassists of all levels. I like that this book tells the history of the blues and also recommends 100's of records to hear how the blues have progressed. The worst thing I can say about this book, is that I wish it was longer. Don't get me wrong, it has everything you need to improve, but I'd like more of it. If you are into playing the blues, and you find that blues bass can get boring, pickup this book and you will find that blues bass can be fun to play and there is so much more then playing in the blues or minor scales.

I think that this was one of the best resources for playing the blues. I think that the blues are the most fun riffs to play. I would recommend this to anyone. Boxxcarr

Yes, it is an instructional book. And, it includes a CD - yes. My overall opinion is that the book is very good and that it is very good for anybody (all levels). All good bassists are not, necessarily, good blues bassists, are they (?). Knowing how to read and write notes, but being a lousy player, I have found Jon Liebman's method very useful. It is my main source for 'blues science', now. Thank you.
