I compared this bass to the Fender 5 & 6 string basses which had wider necks and string spacing, and to Ibenez 5 string, which was very nice but $100 more. I think it is the 5 string bass of choice for lower end spending. I only wish the neck was black like the body.
Price: $399.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Brook May's Austin Texas
Features:
I chose Peavy Foundation 5 because it is crafted in the U.S.A. I believe in supporting hard working americans. My five string, 21 fret bass has a maple neck with a black body and chrome hardware. It has two volume controls, one for each of the two humbucking pickups, and one tone control.
Playability:
The nonstandard close string spacing allows 5 strings to fit where there is normaly 4 strings on the neck and is better for me because I have short fingers for a bass player. It has close action and does not buzz at all.
Sound Quality:
My bass has a full sound and only seems to pick up noise from neon lights if the volume controls are not equal. It would be easy to convert to active pickups but I have not seriously considered it.
Durability:
I find the bass to be riliable for steady live playing and it will stay in tune. I've never had to adjust the truss-rod and it is not effected by changes in climate. I have had problems with the lock nut for the 1/4" jack staying tight though.

All things considered this is the best bass I have ever owned. And that puts it in very good company (Fender, Gibson, Pedulla, Rickenbacher and Warrior)
Model Year: 1996
Price: $795.00 (new)

Playability:
I like to play my action as low and close as possible without any string or fret noise, this bass made the grade with flying colors! I have played many basses through the years and have never found a comparable instrument in any price range(bolt-on neck, passive pickups)I dont even get any noise on the B string and it is lower than most regular guitars!!

Durability:
When I bought my bass it had fallen off the rack in the store( A 5 FOOT drop) Aside from the expected scratches and scrapes the playability was undisturbed and it didnt even go out of tune. I have been playing it for almost 5 years now and have never had a problem with it.
