This video shown the johns style on bass some sections covered are scales harmonics tapping right left hand techniques and two very cool jammings first of all this video is very good but you must be a serious player to use it becouse its very boring all the scale stuff but as john says they realy help i have been playing for four years and this video helped me alot to improve my playing on sertain technigues.

The sound and picture are great. I've had it for more than a year now, and I keep going back to it every week to attempt some of the stuff I haven't mastered. I mostly do the chord patterns in circle of fifths, for which I programmed my drum machine. They're easy to do, although it takes time to go through them all and memorize them. I think the best part of the video is just watching Myung be melodic and technically proficient at the same time. The jam session with Portnoy, though, is not really useful. I thought Myung did more for Portnoy in his Progressive Drum Concepts! Anyway, this video is a must for players who like progressive rock/metal.

Progressive Bass Concepts is NOT a bad video, it just has a very, very bad first half. He seems to think that not only is the viewer unfamiliar with playing arpeggios in various patterns, but he chooses to spend quite a bit of time playing every possible pattern for EVERY 7th chord, which gets old. Not that its unnecessary information, its just most people either know it, or could learn it via a cheaper and more effective source (any typical bass fretboard book). Now the second half, thats a different story. He briefly and effectively discusses left and right hand technique, tapping and harmonics, and gives a few play along examples. He closes with an absolutely gorgeous song, "freeport jam". The closing songs is one of the best bass solos ive ever heard, he really lets go and feels his notes, all 2,525,252,355,745,734 of them, lol. its fair to say its worth the money to buy the video, but youll propably end up selling it for 5 bucks at your local used store. I recommend it, but if could have been alot better, lets hope he makes another. MVH

Ok, I know there are a lot of Myung fans here at AB, and I am one of them. We may praise his knowlege and playing skills, but he is about as exciting as a mud fence. He barely squeeks out the words when he talks and seems very shy and quiet. His playing is, of course, fabulous. The reason I am posting this review is only this. If you are about to drop about 30.00 on this video and are expecting to be entertained, forget it!! He is very softspoken and boring, but man he totally jams!!! He is very innovative and creative. I got more out of the book that the video came with. There is a jam at the end with the other members of Dream Theater that is nothing short of amazing, but that's the only real highlight.
