I've heard every single Offspring album, and I've been a fan of them for years. But I didn't discover the treasure that this album is until only a couple years ago. People talk about Smash and how good it is. They've probably never heard Ignition before.
The album opens with a man screaming the f-word into the mic several times, then going into a fast punk-style drum beat.
The bass playing fits into the sound well, but don't expect anything overly fancy. Most of the time, he's just playing the root note, but it doesn't matter.
The tracks range from a rants about boring sex (Session), police brutality (LAPD), drugs (Hypodermic), and suicidal friends (No Hero) to fun songs about pyromania (Burn It Up) and others.
It's very difficult to describe the overall sound of this album. I could just say punk, but that would be lying, and the same thing would be true if I said just rock or pop. Overall, it doesn't fit into any spiecific category of music.
The best track on the album is probably LAPD. It shows that Dexter wasn't affraind to use "shocking" words to convey his point, and it's pretty catchy, too.
If you're a fan of The Offsping's newer albums, do yourself a favor, and take a listen to LAPD, Dirty Magic, and Kick Him When He's Down. Trust me, it's worth the 15 bucks.
