Playability:

I have not received it yet.Was told that it was a great deal by a friend.I have always played guitar(electric and acoustic) and decent keyboard. Have never played bass. Just received digital 4-track recorder with additional drum track and want to play all the instruments(except drums).
Bought Rogue RB-20B amp because I wanted to practice at home and it is a MusiciansFriend brand made by other manufacturers. They said it would be fine for home recording and small gigs. It's got an 8" speaker several features.I haven't received it yet either.Looking forward to learning to play it. I have been playing acoustic and electric rock with the guitar. I like traditional rock(ok I'm older) and soft ballads.I don't know the sound quality except what friends have told me.
It was active and the price was right. It took some grief to get it right but after I got things in order I found it to be a good bass.

Alright, I have to say that I do enjoy this bass a great deal, but as for off the shelf playibility, let's just say that I was less than impressed. I broke the cardinal rule of buying a bass, I didn't plug it in at the shop.
Here's what I discovered when I got home:
UNBELIEVABLY dirty control pots, when I removed the plate I found a huge amount of paint overspray and very fine sawdust which was painted as well.
The neck buzzed with the stock strings (Boomers) so I desided to adjust the neck. I removed the cover and found more dusty overspray and the truss rod nut was painted into place.
This didn't make me happy, but after cleaning and lubing the pots and getting all the crapola out of the cavity, I reassembled it, set the string height and moved on to the neck.
It took an exato knife, a small screwdriver and sandpaper to remove the nut from the rod and the paint from the nut. I lubed and installed the nut and put on some new strings before setting the relief.
Aside from all this I found the instrument to be more than adequate. The neck came around and I haven't had any more problems with the controls. It's a GREAT bass for the price but plug it in before buying it !
Neck is mostly stable with OK frets, not to dead.
Built like a tractor, The finish is beautiful.
At first glance I thought for sure this axe was in the $800.00 plus range. So I tried out a few other basses and was not happy, so I thought I would check this AK-4 out (Why not?) and when I saw the price tag. I was sold! The only thing negative about the AK-4 is that Hartke dosn't have a hard shell case..so you'll have to shop around for one. But even so its a really nice axe! Check one out!
