Marcus Miller...what can I say? MM is the great one in my mind; my absolute favorite player in the world. M2 (M squared) is Marcus' crowning achievement, winning the 2001 Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album!

The overall sound of this album is wonderful, with a great deal of diversity in the sound and style. Marcus gives us everything from a John Coltraine track to his take on "Amazing Grace" to a wonderfully-jazzy rendition of "Burning Down the House" by Talking Heads. The song's feature track has to be "Power", a Jamaica, Queens-inspired track from Marcus's personal collection. As marcusmiller.com reads, "I wanted you to know right off the bat that this is a MM joint".

A definite buy for everyone. Not just bass players.

The recording of this disc is great. The material for me is not what Marcus Miller is capable of. There is a good cover of Billy Cobham's 'Red Baron' and a stellar version of 'Burnin' Down The House'. Other than that I wasn't as happy with the disc as I thought I would be. It seems of late the every bassist needs to put out a disc to stay current, but lacks in breakthrough material.

Morsels for Miller

Being a newcomer to the world of funk & jazz, I'm not too familiar with many albums where the bass is the star of the show. Victor Wooten's What Did He Say? was the first album I ever heard with bass as the lead instrument. But I now know that Victor wasn't the first since people like Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke and others where well a head of their time when they released solo albums. Another big name in bass is Marcus Miller whose new album M2, is one of the best examples of bass music for the new millenium that I have ever heard.

If you're a new bass player, his tecnique will blow you away and his experience will wisen you up to practice, study and play more. M2 is not only filled with "technical difficulties", but Miller's compositions actually make sense. His lines are catchy and memorable. I'll be shock if you're not mellowing out to the acoustic bass line on "Boomerang". Or if you don't find yourself huming the main melody on the opening track "Power". If Miller's other albums are as good as this one, then I just become a Marcus Miller Fan. CHECK OUT M2!

Following on from his most recent offering "Tales",this cd proves yet again , a breath of fresh air.Punctuated by Marcus' killer tone on both fretted and fretless basses, this cd positively smoulders with funk and massive grooves. It probably compares more in feel to "The Sun Don't Lie" than "Tales",but it features larger groups of musicians on most cuts with horns and saxes well to the fore. With Marcus handling many of the playing duties on various instruments, there is also a large cast of musicians that deserve credit for their performances.Included in this list Herbie Hancock,Djavan from Brazil,Wayne Shorter,Lenny White and Kenny Garrett, amongst others. The production quality of the disc is superb, with a good balance achieved throughout. It is hard for me to describe the bass playing; I don't think there are enough superlatives to accurately assess Marcus'peformance. The bass playing is quite simply staggering. This guy is still improving. Particular standout tracks are ; Lonnie's Lament, It's Me Again, and Your Amazing Grace featuring the vocals of Chaka Khan. That being said these are only personal favourites.I recommend all you funk lovers go and buy this as soon as it's available.I was very lucky ,I managed to get a copy via Amazon Germany as it's not available in the U.K yet.Quite simply this guy is an all time great, don't miss this one folks.
