Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade

by Les Claypool

(2001) Prawn Song #0119000012

Personnel Les Claypool, Todd Paclebar Huth, Eenor [gtr, vocals] Jeff Chimenti [keys, vocals] Jay "Rhino Boy" Lane [drums, vocals] Skerik [saxophone]
Description Les wanted to put together an eclectic band and this is the result. While it may seem a departure from Primus, the result is a jam band that takes it's roots from Col. Bruce Hampton and Clockwork Orange.

This is the perfect jam Band C.D. Les has managed to keep his Midas touch while joining some other very note worthy musicians. Every cover is that much better than the origianls. If you like fine tuned musicianship than this is the c.d. for you. See them live it is mind blowing. Have a Nice Day!!

Definitly a great recording, but not up to Les Claypool standards. First of all, the set has five of seven songs coming from Sausage or Holy Mackerel. Not very much variety campared to bootleg recordings of this set that include "Harold of the Rock" and "Colonel Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade" (Beatles cover of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"). Secondly, the commentary on Live Frogs: Set One isn't as exciting or humorus as it could have been. Definitly not a shining moment for Claypool's acute wit. And lastly, the sound quality didn't seem to be up to par, considering other live Claypool productions such as Suck On This and and the bonus tracks from Rhinoplasty. Overall, Live Frogs: Set One is a good album, but don't pay twenty dollars for it. Wait a few years and snatch it out of the Bargin Bin at you local hardware store. I'll have my eye out for Live Frogs: Set Two (cover of entire Pink Floyd album, "Animals"), and hopefully it shall be more impressive.

This set opens with King Crimson's "Thela Hun Ginjeet" and closes with Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and includes 5 Claypool penned tunes. This band burns throught the material having a lot of fun along the way, lots of cool sounds and some excellent rhythm section work. Les is a surprise to me here playing his trademark bass lines and then stepping back, shouldering his fair share of the groove so the other players can do their thing. Les is also funny as hell when introducing numbers and members of the band.
