I think this is one of Donnies all time best Lps. Back in the 70s a lot of bands back home ( Philly) did stuff off this album, but the best song was Everything is Everything. I was surprised, as well as very happy to see other bassist from around the country, down with Willie Weeks. His playing on this LP and most especially on this song was, and still is what I feel playing bass is all about. This was the first bass solo I ever learned, and I still play it sometimes now. Id say if you play R&B, or you are a young bassist and want to hear some mean bass playing check this Lp( for all you O.G ) CD (for all you Y.G )

I totally agree!!!!! On, What's Going On, I just realized that I've always paid more attention to the bass line than the singing Even before I started playing bass.(of course, nothing against Donny).

From the opening groove of "What's Going On" to the amazing bass solo on "Everything is Everything" that ends this disc you get a lesson on funk, fun, great bass playing and stage craft from a tight band doin' it. Donny Hathaway has a beautiful so8ulful voice, Stevie meets Marvin, and his keyboard playing is excellent plus he has a relaxed front man style that appreciates that audience and respects the other players on stage. As an example he introduces all of the players as they are about to take a solo, he gets the audience to participate in some of the best singing heard from a live crowd. The guitar players are both accomplished and tasty accompanists as well as fine soloists, both drummers are great, but let's get to the point........ Willie Weeks, who is introduced before his solo as "the baddest bass player in the Country" (can I get a witness) is the king of this record, his bass tone is there, his playing is supportive in the pocket and always propelling the song in the right direction. No struggling to pick out bass parts here thae bass is well up in the mix as it should be. The added bonus here is the bass solo that every bassist who's ever heard it has raved about as the best solo ever (amen), now Willie isn't a chops monster or anything, he's just tasty and funky. Remember this was recorded in 1971 before bass players really stepped out much. Jaco, Stanley, Tommy Shannon and a whole bunch of other bass players alL agree, Willie is the man and that solo is the s---.. I had an LP of this for yeas but it was "borrowed" some time ago and I am rediscovering it's beauty. Sadly this CD is kinda hard to find but there are some import pressings around from the UK and Germany that are pretty good. The German version I have, $18.99 @ Borders, has no liner notes at all but the sound is fine. Take the time to find this recording it is well worth the effort.
