This video is a good next step up from the Ultimate Beginners Series Bass Basics videos, and should not be viewed before going through the Bass Basics video. The sound and picture quality were on par with the Bass Basics, and somewhat resembled an industrial training film. Nothing fancy, but gets the point accross well.
The examples shown, and the techniques that are explained have helped me to better lock in with a drummer, and have greatly improved my string muting.
The material is well suited to a beginner, but not an absolute beginner. I have been playing a little under a year, and it is the right video and the right time I feel. It definately is geared toward Rock Music, particularly classic rock, which is a good foundation to expand from.
It does deviate from the Bass Basics video in that the instructor uses a six string that throws an unneccesary complication in the video, use of a four string, which is what the intended audience would almost exclusively be using, would help. The explaination of the bass lines could use more detail. The instructor does do an excellent job of demonstrating various string muting techniques, and with the rewind button, you can get the gist of the lines he is trying to show you. DO NOT GET THIS VIDEO IF YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE BEGINNER! Get the Bass Basics video or some time with a real live breathing instructor first. There is a lot of material assumed by this video. However I wouldn't even claim you have to be an intermediate player, you just can't start from zero and expect to go anywhere with this one. There is a great deal of room for improvement here, but I do feel this was a worthwhile use of my $25.00 (I got both videos, the book, and the practice CD from Guitar Center).
If you are between total newbie, and intermediate player, then this video will suit you well, it's not perfect, but like I said, I certainly don't regret buying it.
