This amp gives me the sound Id been looking for quite some time. I dont plan on using it as my main amp forever, Im looking into the new yorkville tube head, with switchable overdrive. However, this amp is priceless to me, and would never give it up, its a classic and it demands respect and awe from anyone who plays through it.
Price: $600.00 CDN
Where Obtained: Music Mania, Ontario Canada
Features:
This is a very old tube amp, one of the first of traynor bass amps. It has 2 channels, each with its own seperate volume, there are the usual bass treble mid controls as well as hi and lo expander knobs. I use this head with a yorkville 4x10 cab, thats about a year old. Overall the features are not there, as compared to a newer amp with channel switching, scoop control and more advanced EQ, but it gets the job done.
Sound Quality:
The sound quality is clean at high volumes, I found that the cab that came with it was a little crackly, My new 4x10 cab by yorkville makes it sound like a dream. This is my first tube bass amp. The sound doesnt compare to that of newer amps, newer amps obviously have a lot of technological advances over this one, but the tone created by the YBA, is classic and no amount of technology can recreate this tone.
Ease of Use:
Obtaining a good sound with this amp is not hard, one channel is more bass oriented, and the other channel is oriented for guitar, however I find that both channels will obtain a great bass sound depending on how you like it. The tone dials are simplistic, but if you own this amp, you dont have it because your trying to create a unique sound to call your own, you have it because you want that raunchy fat classic bass sound you hear on the old rock and roll albums.
Durability:
The head is built like a tank, however, as with any tube amp I wouldnt adivse banging it around very much, but the panelling on the front is all metal and the knobs are very sturdy.
