I would recommend that anyone looking for a great practice amp to take a good look at the Peavey Minx. Don't bother buying a new one (save up for your gig rig) but look around for a used one for under $100. You can't go wrong in my opinion.
Price: $80.00
Where Obtained: Music-go-round
Features:
I have found this Minx anp to be great for practicing, and even playing with guitar and drums.
Sound Quality:
I run a 40 year old Italian hollowbody bass through this amp and get any sound I'm looking for without using any effects.
Ease of Use:
This amp does not compare to older tube amps like the Ampeg B-15, but then it was way inexpensive in comparison.
Durability:
This amp is well constructed with metal corners and a solid mesh front. I cleaned it up one day with a vinyl cleaner at it looks new.

I like my peavey. it was cheap, reliable, and i knew it would last since i wouldnt be getting another amp 4 awhile.
Price: $179.00
Where Obtained: Margarites music store
Features:
It has a 3 band equalizer, 35watt speaker, and a 75 watt amp. its a pretty basic amp, but its loud enough for my raging metal. no channel, or reverb. but it has an effects loop, also a parellel output, so i can record a demo.
Sound Quality:
I use an ibanez pd7 overdrive/distortion. its a lil fuzzy, but my sans-amp foot pedal clears her out. i once had a crate, but i blew the damn speaker. but this one has a strong input. i never had any problems with this one.
Ease of Use:
It takes a lil fiddleing, but i usually keep my controls the same. i dont mess around with the equalizer, i like the way it sounds already.
Durability:
It has metal edges, so its structure strong. it would be OK in a live gig. but id rather have a stack.

I looked at the microbass, then this. To me it was worth the extra hundred dollars. The sound is pretty amazing for its size.
Model Year: 2003
Price: $240.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Sam Ash
Features:
As everyone has said its great. Lots of controls. Lots of power.
Sound Quality:
Sound quality is great, if you could spare the extra hundred for this instead of a Microbass, do it. Its a way better practice amp.
Ease of Use:
Very easy to use, all knobs are self explainatory.
Durability:
I played it every day since around Thanksgiving of 2003, and its great. A nice solid amp.

Great little practice amp, with the ability to handle small gigs when necessary... I would replace this amp if stolen... My only complaint is the combination pre gain/volume control... Should be separate controls...
Model Year: 2001
Price: $170.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Link's Music, Hanover, PA
Features:
Excellent little practice amp... 10 inch speaker, DDT speaker protection circuit, 50 watts into 4 ohm or 35 watts at 8-ohms...1/4" external speaker jack in parallel with internal 8-ohm speaker...Normal/Bright button, pre gain knob (my only complaint - the pre gain knob also serves as the main volume control...should be separate in my opinion), Low, Mid, and High controls, post EQ effects loop, headphone jack... Plenty loud for a practice amp, and even to play out for small gigs...
Sound Quality:
I use a Carvin BK4A active/passive that I built, a Fender Standard P-bass, and an Ibanez GSR100... I do get some line noise with the passive basses, but none from the active... I play mostly older hard rock, metal, and some new alternative stuff.. This amp handles these styles without skipping a beat... For effects, I use a Dunlop crybaby wah, and a Zoom 506II.. Both work great through this amp...
Ease of Use:
Simple contols, easy to adjust for different styles of play...
Durability:
Easily portable, tough, solid construction, solid state electronics... I've used this amp daily for 8 months now, haven't had a single problem....

I would definitely replace this little amp if it were lost or stollen. It has a great deal of brass for a little amp. I was pleasantly surprised.
Model Year: 2000
Price: $140.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Skip's Music
Features:
Simple controls, volume and three tone controls(low, mid, and high*my guess is these are an attempt at a cheap parametric EQ*). An effects patch point is included although unnecessary if you use stomp boxes. I was very surprised at the power of this little amp. More than enough power for stage use.
Sound Quality:
This little amp sounds great for its size. It could use a two inch port to help the speaker breath. Compared to other amps of the same size, this amp blows them away.
Ease of Use:
Very easy to use. For the obvious reasons.
Durability:
Very steady during live play. I haven't had to repair this unit. Construction is excellent. However I have added a two inch port to allow the speaker to breath when I hit the low B on my bass.
