This album is simply through the roof!!!! The opening track Charlie Parkers 'Donna Lee' I originally thought it was a keyboard synth or summit. It took me a whole day to realise it wasn't!!! My god, the man can play! 'Portrait Of Tracy' is superb as well.

This is an essential CD that every jazz lover and bassist should have in their library. Even though I wasn't born until 83', I try and sit there and think that I was there around the Jaco times and its hard to believe what I am hearing. Jaco's styles were so far advanced than any other bassist in the 70's/80's. He definatly blows away Paul McCartney.

The cd is amazing. the day i bought it i never turned it off. there is so many different rythms and melodies on this album. this is a portrait of raw talent. its too bad he was cut down and well you never know what he may have acomplished after the 80's peace. vc

This record is great. I bought it about 5 hours ago on impulse having read 1 review on here. I havent stopped listening to it yet (And its 2:30 AM). Jaco is A-MAZ-ING. My favorite song would definitely be Portrait of Tracy. Its soo mellow and has a beautiful sound. In this cd you can find fast rhythems ... fast solos... slow rhythems...slow solos....its great...so much variety. If you like the bass...and i'm sure you do... buy it... its amazing in my opinion.

This is the album the showed me the difference between a talented bassist and gifted bassist! jaco was a gifted musician along the lines of parker/miles/coltrane/hendrix /s wonder/ect. i'm old enough to remember pre jaco and post jaco, and man did he make an impact! also not to be overlooked is 'word of mouth'(scary) aloha, jerry

When I saw the cover I was reluctant to buy it, but I was glad I did. This is full of biting fretless j tone and jacos fingers did wonders like on donna lee. the song is great. Portrait of tracy is my favorite because of the unorthodox playing style yet it sounds so beautiful and melodic. This album is a must have for any bass player that doesnt want to play straight eighths the rest of his life.

This is Jaco's first recording as a solo artist. The opening track "Donna Lee" spawned a fleet of "Jaco like" fretless players that contiues to grow even today. His personality was legendary and his music unforgetable!

It's really hard to put into words the huge influence this album has had on me. It's even more difficult on a site dedicated to bass players. The only thing I can say for sure it that this album is a MUST LISTEN by every bass player at some point in their development.

A lot of students ask me what to listen for on this album. Listen to the fluidity and phrasing of the Charlie Parker classic "Donna Lee", the 16th note groove on "Come on Come Over", and the genius technique and musicality in "Portrait of Tracy".

Jaco was a great bass player but I would venture to say that he was even a better composer. Nowhere is that more evedent than the beautifull "Forgotten Love" that ends the album.
