Effects can come and go, but this one is a cherished and irreplaceable part of my bass rig.
Price: $100.00
Where Obtained: Ebay
Features:
Drive-Output-Bass-Mid-Treble. AC powered. Internal 12AX7 vacuum tube. Very solid steel contruction.
Sound Quality:
Exquisite even-order harmonic tube overdrive. I am addicted to the Blue Tube sound. Can produce lots of distortion if desired, but I like to produce distortion dynamically by varying intensity of attack. Have used it with Gibson Thunderbird (original, not reissue) and Rickenbacker basses and it complemented both like fine wine. Currently using it with a Crate BT100 and a Rogue 6-string bass. Suits any style.
Ease of Use:
Simple but has a lot of tonal colors to choose from, so it can be as complicated as your imagination allows.
Durability:
Rock-solid, built like a tank, but treated like a baby because it contains a real tube.

Anyone with a cheap, solid-state amp should try this. Also, if you are getting too much distortion, try a 12AU7 tube.
Model Year: 2000
Price: $80.00
Where Obtained: Ebay
Features:
Output, Drive, Low, Mid, High. A 12AX7 tube. Real easy. AC powered (why aren't all pedals built like this?)
Sound Quality:
It makes my Peavey TKO sound great. Enough said.
Ease of Use:
Easy to use, and it's pretty fun to screw with the knobs and get widely different tones.
Durability:
Rugged steel case. You could hit it with a baseball bat and maybe the tube would break.

For $50 this unit did more to open up the sound of my GK head than anything else I have tried. While the A/C operation is overall a big plus, it does limit placement of the unit on stage. If you are using a solid state amp and want to expand on the tonal possibilities this is a great little box to try out.
Price: $50.00
Where Obtained: eBay
Features:
Level and Drive controls with Low, Mid & High e.q. AC powered no batteries or wall wart. Features one 12AX7 preamp tube. A more posiitve feeling (acting) switch would be nice but the one that comes with the unit is very quiet.
Sound Quality:
This is one of those little boxes that does exactly what it's supposed to. It "warms" up the sound of solid state amps by adding overdriven tube distortion to the signal chain. Not really a distortion box but it does it's job through measured use of tube distortion. To my ears it is much more natural sounding than any of the more common "distortion" boxes available.
Ease of Use:
Incredibly easy to use, set the e.q. flat, dial in a little overdrive and feel the glow.
Durability:
Built like a tank. Very heavy duty construction and the internal components are epoxied into place. Have never had any problems with the unit.
