I wouldn't gig with it, but it's marketed as a practice amp anyway. If a good solid, highly portable practice amp is all you're looking for, look no more. The 8" speaker has it's pros and cons, and 20w isn't exactly a PA system. I will probably upgrade in the future, but for now I'm happy with this little gem.
Price: $40.00
Where Obtained: second hand
Features:
Gain, low, mid, high, headphone jack nothing fancy. no frills.
Sound Quality:
I use it with my 97 Squire Musicmaster. I play mostly bluegrass and blues and it gets the job done. I can even keep up with a heavy handed drummer, but more than that and I start to get drowned out. It's no monster and it doesn't handle the higher octaves very well (despite what I expected from an 8" sub). It does, however, play the low notes with a lot of authority and sounds pretty clean overall.
Ease of Use:
Again, simplicity is the keyword. No fancy stuff. The controls are pretty straight foreward, and I've been able to get a variety of sounds from dark and heavy to light and woody. Keep the gain knob low (remember, volume knob is on your guitar, not the amp) best to just set that bad boy and not fool with it anymore. The EQ settings are a breeze, and once you get up close and personal, you'll be able to dial it in pretty quick. I put marks with a centerpunch at the settings I like for the music I play most often so I can dial it back in a flash.
Durability:
It's been beat, kicked and even thrown and it still looks and sounds the same as when i first got it. My handle did break, but it was an easy fix with a new (bigger) screw.

Where Obtained: A friend
Features:
Four knobs gain, low, mid, and high EQs. What else do you need in a small 20amp practice amp?
Sound Quality:
It sounds OK not great but for a small practice amp the tone is adequate. This amp can not be used for gigging or jamming. It is made for practicing that is what it is good for.
Ease of Use:
Very easy
Durability:
I have had this amp for a long time and never had a problem with it.

Its excellent for practice if thats your need. I wouldnt do any jamming with this as Ive tried and was needing more sound however it was hearable and tonable in the garage with a 5 piece drum set with a hard playing drummer. So its loud enough and the 8' speaker will suprise you of its strength..Just dont get carried away cause if the keyboard players would have showed up I wouldnt have been heard...Nice amp otherwise.
Model Year: 2004
Price: $120.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Hot Licks Guitar Store
Features:
It has a low-mid-high output controls along with a master volume. Its not powerful however it should handle any of your practice needs with ease.
Sound Quality:
I use a Squire MB-5 with the Low B. It rattles at high volume on the low B and plays the highs pretty well. The volume is pretty clean as long as your not pushing it to the edge...I noticed I get distortion when I turn up my pan pot on the Mb-5 at high levels. But this amp will cover your basic practice needs without a hitch.
Ease of Use:
Umm its plug and play....put the bass down if you have any other questions.
Durability:
Just got this puppy so I dont know how it will stand up. But its for practice and youd be hard pressed to hear yourself over live drum playing.

I didn't look at many other amps, I purchased this because I read about it in Bassplayer magazines practice amp shootout and I couldn't be happier with it. I would definitely buy this again as my practice amp if it were lost or stolen. I can't imagine how it could be better as a practice amp without adding features that are not realistically going to appear on a small combo. My favorite aspect of this bass is the sound, the worst aspect might be the slight distortion at high treble settings but that is a stretch since it rarely happens unless i play at full volume with my treble rolled all the way on (it also may be a result of my active pickups overloading the treble). I would highly recommend this amp as a beginner level combo, but also as a practice amp for the experienced player.
Price: $70.00
Where Obtained: Ebay
Features:
The Microbass has a 3 Band EQ (Low, Mid, High) as well as a stereo output for headphones. For a 20 Watt combo amp it pumps out astounding volume, enough for low volume jamming. It is a stolid state amplifier.
Sound Quality:
The 3 band EQ helps this amp to produce a wide variety of tones suitable for many different types of music. This is primarily my practice amp, however I imagine I would be able to get suitable tones for any type of music I desired out of it. It definitely sounds better than the old Ibanez practice amp I used to have, and better than any other small combo I've played through. It's very clean sounding except at the highest treble setting, when it distorts a little bit.
Ease of Use:
The amp is not programmable, but it doesn't take very much to get a good sounds out of it. It is very easy to use.
Durability:
It is extremely reliable, I have never had any problems with it needing to be repaired and it has seen a couple of Vermont winters and been transported back and forth between bass lessons and jam sessions innumerable times.

Pretty good amp ,for home use but like all practice combo's, not really one for road use unless it was a very small place.
Model Year: 2002
Features:
Typical practice combo, with gain, low, mid, high controls- 1x ext jack for a cabinet, so there is room for expansion
Sound Quality:
Sounds pretty bright, but not deep enough for my taste it has 20 watts, have'nt dared try it flat out cos the manual does not recomend it, so what does that tell you? It boasts closed back construction??????and 1 input & 1 headphone socket and no cd input.
Ease of Use:
Not many things to play with on this baby !!!!!!!!

Well built but I dont think it would like to work hard for too long.

I it were ever lost or stolen i wouldint buy another one, beacuse without the $90 speaker upgrade it is'itn worth the fake-wood it's made of.
Model Year: 1999
Price: $75.00
Where Obtained: juste music
Features:
It has a 3 band eq. , vol. ,input, headphones, and a removable speaker cover (which i kind of cool). It sounds great, as of right now, it sounded like crap with the stock speaker turned up over level 3. Thats why I bought a $90 perimid woffer for it. It sounds great now
Sound Quality:
I use a AUSTIN P-bass, a ZOOM BFX-708 pedal and play mostly rock and blues. it works good for me. It is'int really that much better than any other 20 watt practice amp.it can get a little noisy above VOL. 7 (level 3 before the speaker upgrade)it dosent have any effects.
Ease of Use:
It is very easy to use, and it takes about 60 sec. or less to adjust the eq. I mean how hard can it be to set up somthing with 3 knobs and a switch???
Durability:
I will say that this is a very durable and has survived many back and forth trips to practice sessions.good little amp!

Price: $120.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Daddy's Junky Music
Features:
It's got a 3 band EQ, which is good for getting the tone i want.
Sound Quality:
I play hard rock/heavy metal stuff, and this amp is good for that. I use it as a practice amp, the sound isn't loud enough to be heard over the guitar and drums, plus the sound gets all distorted and messed up if you crank it up all the way.
Ease of Use:
It's very easy to use, and it's not too heavy, so it's easy to move it around.

It's very durable, can be kicked around and still stay toghether.

5 out of 5 I've demoed other ones for buddies of mine getting into bass playing, just to see what else was out there (I bought mine originally unheard). Nothing else compares.
Price: $50.00
Where Obtained: friend of a friend
Features:
Standard practice amp features. Nothing to write home about but everything you need to get started and to jam in the ol' bedroom. One thing I'd note is that the eq on this amp sounds much better to my ear than the ones on the Fender and Crate practice amps that I've demoed for friends. This is the factor that kicks the features up to 4.
Sound Quality:
5. Note, this is a 5 when compared to other models in this price range. Best words I ever heard spoken about this amp was that it doesn't sound like a practice amp.. it sounds like a good bass amp, just quieter. This is absolutely 100% true.
Ease of Use:
Not a lot to complain or get excited about here. Plug n play.
Durability:
An absolute tank. Bought mine used. I've it for 5 years now and it's never hiccuped. I've dragged it across a half a dozen states used it as a chair and footstool for months at a time, and it still sounds great and has nary a problem. A tank!

Features:
3 Band EQ, HeadPhone Jack. It's a 50W so your not gonna bring the house down.
Sound Quality:
It's not the cheapest of the 50Ws and the reason is the sound quality. It's excellent. Does distort a bit when you cranking it up to the max but heck, no amp should ever be put to the max. 50Ws = practice... don't even try to play with a drum. I even use it as a sub for my TV 8)
Ease of Use:
It's basic so it's easy to use. If my mom can use it, it's childs play.

The usual tank. I've only had it for 1 year but I played it to the max more then once and the sound is still sweet.

I chose this amp because it has a good, fairly clean sound, durable body, and has the sound I want, even if it might need some tweaking to get there. The price was good too. It has a great sound, except for a bit of distortion at high volumes. All in all, though, if you are looking for a good little practice amp, definetly take a look at this one.
Model Year: 1996
Price: $65.00
Where Obtained: Music Factory
Features:
Little 15 watt practice amp with low, high, and mid controls, input and phone jacks. Nothing special, but for the price, it's worth it. Powerful for a little amp. You could still hear it in a jam session with larger amps. Solid state with solid backing. Even turning it up all the way and slamming the bass, it has yet to blow.
Sound Quality:
I use a vantage bass and, occasionally an Ibanez soundgear 5string thru this little amp. I use it for almost every style, rock, blues, punk, jazz, and it sounds good through it all. As far as the little amps I've played, Fenders, Ibanez, etc, this one is the best. The slight down side for me is when it's loud, it gets a bit distorted and i like a really clean sound.
Ease of Use:
This amp takes a bit of tweaking to obtain a custom sound, but I like the fact that i can go through all the different sounds to get my own. I believe that the more the fiddling to get YOUR sound the more versatile the amp is.
Durability:
This has taken some beating and always came out on top unscathed. Real heavy duty construction. I have yet to repair it, but I wouldn't hurt to do so. Not the most durable amp I've played, but it still is worthy of the title of "Hard Assed Amp"

This amp is a 20 watt but I swear that the sound you can get out of this thing is LOUDER! The headphone socket comes in handy especially at 4 in the morning when I dont wanna wake my parents!
Sound Quality:
The sound here is excellent.I have turned it up full volume for a while and my ears where ringing like mad!Compared to other amps I ve used this one is a lot more reliable!
Ease of Use:
It is very easy to use simply because it only has 4 knobs on so unless your an elephant it really isnt that hard to work out!

This amp is very durable but its pretty heavy is your planning on lugging it around often. I guess this just shows how tough it is hey?

I also use a DOD bass30 effects pedal with it and it works great. tryed to use it in a jam session when I was first starfting out, not something ya wanna do. when turned all the way up with all 3 equalizers up full it will distort but puts out a very loud clean sound for it's size.

For such a small amp it sounds big! I play in low B and it handles it really well. Although I wouldn't use any effects pedals with it in case I blow it up! It uses a form of compression to stop the sound from distorting.
Ease of Use:
You really have to crank the volume up to get a good sound, and the levels have to be slightly to the left to benfit, but that maybe down to the low tuning.

Model Year: 2000
Price: $200.00 Singapore Dollars (new)

Features:
3 band eq, quite standard for such an amp. Good response, without the muffled sound most other amps have when you play extremely low notes.
Sound Quality:
Very clean sound. Sounded better than the Fenders and Crates the salesperson was trying to sell me
Ease of Use:
Simple operation. Just adjust the eq for the sound you want and just play
Durability:
Well, for a practice amp, it looks sturdy enough. It even survived a downpour on my way home from a jamming sesson at a friend's.........

In my case i had no choice my friend was selling this amp and i got it for 50 bucks this amp gave a nice sound but it wasn't the sound that fit my taste. loud at home yet when played at max volume could still be drowned out by a 20 watt guitar amp. and could barely be heard over a drummer in close range.if you stlye is more of a bright modern sound then this is for you. if you want a clean drive vintage sound. dont waste your time here.
Price: $60.00
Where Obtained: a friend
Features:
This amp features a 3 band eq basically its a practice amp it plays loud but i have an older version of the microbass when the pregain is trurned up it gives a really ditorted sound which can be annoying when one wants a clean sound or has effects.
Sound Quality:
For the most part i usually only use a zoom 506 and boss bass chorus. when the low filter on the bass chorus is turned low the amp will usually rattle. i play mostly punk and grunge and this amp is adverse but doesnt get a perfect sound for my taste
Ease of Use:
Things dont get any more simple than this.
Durability:
I played with this this amp very hard eventually the speaker got blown out and that was the end now im wondering if i should repare it

I really like this amp. Since I started playing I have gotten a new amp, but I still use this one regularly because I don't feel like lugging the other one to all the rooms of my house. It has great tone and is a great deal, the best practice amp I've ever played on, I highly recommend it, I would give it an overall 5, but I'll give it a 4 and let y'all decide whether or not it should be higher or lower.
Model Year: 1996

Features:
The Peavey Microbass is a solid-state practice amp with a centrally mounted 8" speaker. Located directly above the speaker is the 3 band EQ that features knobs for bass (low), mid, and treble (high). Adjacent to this are the imput jack and the pregain, and on the other side the headphone jack and the power button. A red LED light tells whether the amp is on or off. It is backed by 20-watts of power, and has a 6' electrical cord. It is great for practice and evereyday use and, depending on how loud your drummer, can easily compete with the other aspects of any jam session.
Sound Quality:
This amp has great tone. It can be mellow and moody, or punchy and thick, whichever way you like it; it conforms very well with most any style. I play a mix of classic rock, funk, R&B and jazz and have been classically trained on upright and the microbass has proved very vesatile. Compared to other practice amps that I've played on this one has outdone them all. The tone that this amp produces is incredible, especially for such a small package. Sometimes when turned all the way up and the EQ maxed out completely it picks up a slight buzz on the low strings, mainly notes from the A to the E. I play a four string, so unfortunately I don't really know how this amp would handle the low B, but having played tenor bass before I know that the high C would be no problem. It generally remains very clean and works well with affects pedals of all sorts.
Ease of Use:
This amp is too basic, and one of thereasons I was skeptical, but it's sound covers for it's lack in intricacy. I find it very easy to adjust to the sound I like. It is the simplest amp I have ever used.
Durability:
This little guy is a beast, it will stand up to anything. It has a sturdy frame and a mesh-like wiring covering the speaker. It's been knocked around, kicked, sat on, stood on, taken in overhead compartments on plains, its done it all. I've even had to second it as a PA and guitar amp before, just kick the treble and mid a bit and drop the bass and your all set. It's really great for traveling due to it's compact size. It also features a handle that is top mounted allowing for suitcase-like transportation. This amp is very well constructed.

When I buy a practice amp, this will very likely be the one. Competitive price with far better bass response than the Crate, Fender or Danelectro.
Features:
This is a small practice amp, but as most do now, it has a three band eq. 20 watts RMS, 8" speaker and headphone jack. No speaker out.
Sound Quality:
I'm a beginner, but tried the Microbass vs. several others in the store. Sounded much more solid than other similarly priced amps by Fender, Crate, and Danelectro. Much better bottom without being muddy; more authoritative. Very good for an 8" speaker.
Ease of Use:
Very easy to set up, and select the sound that you want.
