I compared a lot of basses before I bought this one. I checked out a Fodera, a Roscoe, an Alembic, a Pedulla, a Citron and a few others. My choices came down to a $4000 used Fodera Elite 5 string fretless( I think it was an Elite it looked sort of like a Fender Jazz bass and had had Jazz Bass pick-up configuration)and this MTD I played them back to back and this bass had lots more tone capabilities, played as well if not better, and was $1100 less brand new! If you have the chance, please take the time to try an MTD bass. I don't think anybody would be disappointed.
Model Year: 2001
Price: $2900.00 (new)
Where Obtained: LA Bass Exchange
Features:
What an amazing bass. This is a bass made for the LA NAMM show and is signed and dated by Michael Tobias on 1-14-01. #647. The bass is beautiful. The body is made with Avadore wood, the neck is Maple, the fingerboard Ebony, and there are Wenge truss-rod, electronic compartments, and headstock pieces. The finish is natural and also it is very light. The bass feels as if it has no finish on it at all but I was assured the wood was completely protected. All of the hardware (bridge and tuners) is Hipshot. The electronics are Bartolini active with Bass, middle, trble controls volume and pickup blend, as well as a mid frequency selector.
Playability:
This bass came set up with an extremely low action. You almost just have to think the notes. (Ha Ha) I am having to adjust my technique but for the better. I have been trying to get a bass with this type of low action for years as I try to play with a light touch. I have not found a single flaw on this instrument.
Sound Quality:
The sound is what I really like about this bass. The combination of wood and finish give it a very big, wide, and open sound. The electronics let you shape this sound to your preference and there are a lot of usable sounds in this bass.
Durability:
The bass is fantastic!! I have had to adjust the truss-rod every couple of days because the bass is brand new and we have been experiencing lots of sporadic and extreme weather chnges here in Southern California. (One day it's sunny and in the 90's and the next it's raining and in the 40's) I expect it to hold up once the spring and summer get here and our weather evens out.
