Overall Rating:
I chose this one in 1993 because of it's value, and confidence in the Carvin line. I also could not afford a Trace Elliot.
Model Year: 1993
Price: $449.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Carvin
Features:
Just your basic bass amp, bi-ampable, but really no frills. Reviewing this in case anyone can get one used on the cheap, and to let folks know they are extremely reliable with a nice solid state clean clear sound. 300 watts into 4 ohms, 150 into 8 ohms, no Speakon connectors, just the 1/4" variety. Controls include volume, bass, treble, with boost switches for the bass and treble, a mid-band parametric style e.q. section, five-band equalizer for overall signal, one knob compressor, one knob noise gate, various protect features which I cannot explain as the manuel is long gone. Has an effects loop and 6db volume boost, adjustable, and can be switched with the old optional FS36 footswitch. The footswitch also switches the 5 band e.q., in or out. If you use it in bi-amp mode, the internal amp supplies the feed to the high frequencies, and a slave is needed for the lows. There is a one knob crossover for the bi-amp mode.
Sound Quality:
It has always been a very tough and road worthy amp, and takes a beating if it happens accidentally. I am sure you can destroy it somehow intentionally. I have used it with Alembics, custom 6 string basses, four stringers, etc. All sounded nice to me. Various cabinets I have used it with, mainly Hartkes and Carvins. It of course does not compare to a nice late 70's SVT all tube, as it is solid state. But, if you are looking for a used quality solid state amp head, this may be for you indeed.
Ease of Use:
Easy to get a basic good sound out of just about anything you may plug into it.
Durability:
Built well as near as I could ever tell, I still use it to this day. Never needed a repair, never even blown the fuse, which is easy access.
