This was a demo project the Jon Raney Trio did for vocalist Audrey Silver. I like the nice relaxed "walking ballad" feel, as it moves forward in a very calm way. We just played two choruses, 1 full vocal chorus for the head in, piano solo for the first A of the second chorus, bass solo for the second A, vocal back in at the bridge and out. The excerpt comes in just after the piano solo, I start the solo with a paraphrase of the melody before moving around a little. Trying to come up with a concise, cohesive statement in 8 bars is a nice challenge (like Hemingway used to say "If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter...").
I thought it came out pretty nicely. |
