Angels

Written for my wife Brenda and daughter Taryn

by Pat Morris

Listen:  Angels.mp3 (2.3MB)
Style:  Alternative
Gear:  Carvin 5 string fretless with DR "Hi Beam" strings
BOSS GT6B effects pedal
Korg Pandora PX3B
Fostex MR8
MusicMatch software

This song is all harmonics except for two low notes at the end (D) octaves, and then one hammer down on a high D at the end with my fingernail. I wanted to create a song that expressed my feelings about my wife and daughter as angelic figured in my heart and soul. On the bass (at least for me) this is hard to do without harmonics. So, I set out to find the right combination of harmonic notes that would express my sense of transcending the real world that angels tend to invoke. The harmonics sounds are different if the strings are plucked at different areas of the neck. So, for a given bass, the area that gives the greatest or desired harmonics effects needs to be found. Once I found the notes I wanted to use, and the area of the neck giving me the best harmonics effects, I wanted to fill it out using the delay. The "JP" effect in the Korg Pandora PX3B helps to create a fuller effect of by syncopating the notes. The default "JP" effect has the delay set on 1000, with the chorus effect set on 1. This song took advantage of two delay effects - the "JP" effect to give me the longer delay to give the song more fill, and the very slight delay effect from the Fostex to give each note a little more fill. Hope you like it.

Settings: BOSS GT 6B effects pedal set on Triad in C Major default with Reverb and Delay. Reverb set on default setting and Delay set on Single, with feedback setting at 40 and effects level setting at 40. The "Glass" effect was also used for the "slow strings" effect in this piece. The piece was recorded on a Fostex MR8 and then converted from WAV format to MP3 with MusicMatch software.
