Jesus Wept

An improvised solo piece performed on 8 string bass.

by Juan Leon

Listen:  JesusWept.mp3 (6.2MB)
Style:  Experimental
Gear:  Carlo Robelli 8 string bass
Gallien Krueger 200 RCB
Apple PowerMac G4
Digidesign Pro Tools

I recorded this piece direct into my Mac's 1/8 jack out of my bass head using an 1/8" to 1/4" jack adapter. I then split the bass into 3 separate tracks and added delay to each track in varying degrees of rate, and feedback. I applied some chorus from my GK 200RCB and let the tape roll. I panned the tracks hard left, hard right, and center for the final mixdown.

I feel the quality of the tune is rather good and it showcases that a musician doesn't need a large studio to capture great music. With a little tweaking and some old studio tricks, this tune is not only a decent sounding piece, but an example of what one can do with some good software, a good computer, and a strong conviction for the music.

If you're just starting out with a 4 track analog tape deck, or you've graduated to a full blown, state of the art digital home studio, hold true to this: the soul of any and all music is and will always be harmony, melody, rhythm, and dynamics. Without these four attributes, music can be cold and meaningless. Don't confuse technique with musicianship. Technique must always be a means to tell your story. A good movie lies in the story telling, the effects will only aid in the telling. So it is with music.

Commit these values to your own life as a musician. With a springboard like this, all of your music will tell a story that everyone will want to hear again and again.
