So Long

A song written for my high-school graduation.

by Josh Scott

Listen:  SoLong.mp3 (6.0MB)
Style:  Rock/Pop
Gear:  Epiphone Thunderbird IV bass
Sadowsky bass preamp
Fender BXR-100 bass amp

The song begins with an electric guitar playing a riff with a chorus effect. At 0:10 the acoustic guitar and vocals enter. The electric continues playing the riff while the acoustic is playing the chords of the song. I enter on the bass at 0:22. At 2:42 the song begins to build to the chorus. The chorus is very loose feeling and anti-climactic following the buildup. It is almost ill-defined within the boundaries of the song but provides homogeny and keeps the song driving and almost unchanged. The song begins to end around 4:00. The ending is composed of an electric guitar riff (different than the intro) and a wind instrument. I wasn't in the studio when that was added, so I'm not sure what it is, but I like it.

I am playing the root of the chord along with some embellishments. I often play runs using the 5th and octave of the root note, this is one of my favorite techniques for slower songs because it adds something but doesn't get too busy and throw off the feel of the song.

This song is a farewell song to all of our high-school friends. It was played a week or so before graduation at what's called "Senior Awards Day". It's where the seniors are awarded for their achievements over their 4 years at my high-school. There were three acts that morning and I think ours got the biggest applause :-). However all three were excellent in my humble opinion. Everyone wanted a single of the song so we went to a local studio and recorded it. Then we went home and made copies on out CD burners. Hope you enjoy it!
