The song "Nevermind" written by my band InBALANCE, was based off of the
bass riff that I came up with in the intro. From there, all the other
members added their magic. Some of my favorite things about the song is the
guitarists delay effects during the verses, the vocal hooks during the
chorus, and my all-time favorite thing is the repeated chorus at the end of
the song with the altered chord changes (ha, that was my idea too!!!).
The bassline was just something that I had been messing with, and the guys in the band liked it enough to work it into a song. The line is based in B-minor, but there are some altered notes in there. During the verses I just lay back into a groove with the drummer, and the second chord is a "d", with a "g" in the bass. I then transition the "g" to resolve to the "d" on the next beat. When performing this song, I just try to lock in the groove with the drummer, then slam out those choruses. We recorded the song a few months after it was written on our Yamaha AW4416 16 track hard disk recorder. We tracked the drums live, then everything else was overdubbed. I played my Warwick Thumb 5 neck-thru, through my SWR Bass 750 and Eden 4X10 Cab. We took a direct line straight off the amp into one track, and an SM57 on one of the tens running through a DBX pre-amp onto another track. During mixdown we used the direct signal for the lows and definition, and the mic'd track for the attack and air. During the mastering phase, I was un-happy with the intro. I thought it sounded too empty and was considering editing it out. But then I decided to try applying an effect to it. The one I chose was called "Mondo-Mod" by Waves. I applied it destructively using Sound Forge 4.5. I applied it to the beginning of the track, then took it off for the first accent, then kicked it back on till the guitar line comes in. |
