Vinyl vs. CD.

I have been having an on-going debate with our leadsinger over whether we should put out new recordings on vinyl. In my eyes it would be foolish to spend over a thousand dollars on a record that only a very few are interested in buying. If you were in the same boat I’m in which would you choose, vinyl or CD?

aaaaahhhhh the analog of vinyl, no CD can compare. But, you have to put out a CD. Doing a record makes no sense in this day and age. I would have to ask what exactly he is trying to accomplish with putting out a record.

I really don’t think he knows what he trying to accomplish by putting the new songs on record. From the beginning he has never had a plan for what he wanted to do with the band. I think he had an idea of what he wanted the band to sound like, but had no idea on how to actually manage the band. I think the only thing he was thinking about when he made the decision to put out a 45 is the fact that he prefers vinyl to CD, and his friend’s bands put out records. What he isn’t thinking about is the bands he knows that release records have a much larger audience then we do. Close to ten years ago the band put out two 45s. I think we ordered around a thousand copies each. We still have boxes of them in the practice space. Now he complains about having boxes of records he can’t do anything with. I’m thinking of telling him if he wants to put out a record he can do it with his own money.

See rule #8:

RULE 1: Stay within your limits. I don’t care what a musician does… coke, heroin, drinking, whores, whatever floats your boat. Regardless of what you do you better be able to play.

RULE 2: Never cancel a gig that you can play. Unless you a physical incapable of doing it you better be there!

RULE 3: Never have sex with your band members current or Ex-girlfriend/wife. A current wife/girlfriend is something that should go without saying. Women want to get back at their ex. If you are in a band there is no greater revenge for a woman than to take down one of your band mates. She doesn’t really want you, she just wants to get back at him. Don’t fall into this! There are far too many women running around the planet to be having sex with one of your band members Ex’s.

RULE 4: Don’t let women come between the band. Women are great helping out bands! Let them help, but never EVER let them on the inside.

RULE 5: Don’t cancel practice without a good reason. Don’t call off practice because you don’t feel like going. If you are sick, hurt, have a family crisis that’s fine. But, you don’t cancel because you just don’t feel like going. I look at it like this: I don’t get paid for gigs, those I play for free. What I get paid for is the practice it took to do the gigs. View practice like that and it will be a lot easier to take. I hate it too but it’s a necessary evil.

RULE 6: Come to practice prepared. Having perfect attendance at practice does no good if you don’t come prepared. If you were supposed to learn a song then LEARN the song. Your time is not more valuable than your fellow band member’s time. Don’t waste their time!

RULE 7: Don’t bring people to band practice. Unless otherwise stated by your band leave your friends, family, significant other, etc. at home. Band practice is for the band.

RULE 8: The sum is greater than the individual. What this means is check your ego at the door! Try to remember you are a piece of something bigger than yourself. Ask what is best for the band, not what is best for you.

RULE 9: Be a professional. From practice to performance and all points in between. Don’t expect to be treated like one if you are not going to act like one.

RULE 10: Don’t hold your fellow band mates to a higher standard than yourself. The members of your band are human and so are you. Humans make mistakes. Striving for perfection is a wonderful thing. Achieving it is impossible. Understanding that simple philosophy will help you avoid unnecessary conflict between members.

I have found that these rules I wrote cover pretty much everything with a band. All you need to do is ask if CD or vinyl is in the best interest of the band. A CD is in the best interest so work on a CD.

Oh I have some of that in my band too. Our singer is good at calling off practice and drinking more than he should at times.

But it's gotta be a CD.. ask your lead singer how many people he actually knows with a record player nowadays... see what he says.. lol.

Good luck

By choosing vinyl you automatically cut your potential audience. I still have lots of vinyl, but I never really play them anymore. I usually buy CD's, rip them to my laptop and put them on my ipod.

If you want to be heard you have to be accessable and make your music easy to obtain and listen to imo.......

I'd buy the vinyl album. I love vinyl. If I have a choice of an LP or a CD, I'd rather have the LP, but that's just my opinion. There are places online you can order very small runs of records from (as low as 100 records). Maybe you could look into that.

I think you're a dying breed. Most people I know would whether have it on a CD.
