String tree...
Most basses I have owned have a string tree on the headstock... is there a point to a string tree (besides being able to grow your own strings), (( got that in before some other smart a@@ does)) hehe.
Plod.

It all comes down to having the right string break over the nut, the nut and bridge saddles are "witness points" in the parlance of luthiery. Having the correct angles at those points allows the strings to speak properly and also influence correct intonation. 17-22 degrees is optimum.
