Webcams and associated stuff...

Hey everybody, been thinking about throwing some videos up on YouTube and so I've been looking around for some affordable cameras. The webcams I've found seem reasonable but I haven't seen anything with any line inputs. Most of them seem to use microphones.

My goal is to maybe publish some ideas, sounds, or whatever to here as well but I want to run the audio through the camera instead of through the air. I'd like to hear what you guys are doing. I know Dave and Roger have some experience with it but I'd like to see what others are doing as well.

Thanks and have a good week.

Hi Bo.

I think your best bet would be to record audio separately. I'd have a mic open and record your bass and any narration as you film but then I'd go back and re-work the track in a DAW. Then you'd put the finished audio back into the video using appropriate video software. In fact, I think Win7 even comes with video editing software.

The reason I suggest this way is you likely won't get everything right on the first take so you're going to be editing anyway and a DAW will give you a much better sound track.

If it's only to record ideas for yourself then the audio captured by the camera will be good enough.

I think Paul is correct with that info. I've made a few short videos over the years (not necessarily music related, No...not THAT kind either (smile)). I find that when I rehearse and get everything to what seems very recordable, when I play it back, its too low volume, too loud volume, the video is not centered, the phone rings, Poocher comes bounding in and wants to go pee pee, etc. I was trying to get an audio clip a couple of years back of my motorcycle sound as I accelerated away. I put the netbook in the travel trunk, ran the mic cable out, duct taped the cable and the mic into position and away I went. Apparently I forgot to set the software to record. Much anguish and hair tearing (something I cannot really afford to be doing by the way). I reset everything, make @$#^ sure it's on and recording and off I go again. About a half mile down the road, I stop and turn around. I notice that the mic is fluttering in the breeze. The recording had about 10 seconds of 1st gear, 2nd gear and then what sounded like Paul Bunyan clearing northern Minnesota!. I gave it up for the day and found a prerecorded sound bit on the internet to use on our website instead.
