Another neck question (Sanding)

I know a lot of players (Geddy Lee does it) sand off the finish on the back of the neck to make it a bit quicker. I've been wanting to try it for a while, but I was wondering if there's anything I should know before hand. Will the wood swell or anything? It's pretty humid up here in Maine right now.

I don't really mind my neck, but I'd just like to try something new.

Had any problems with it afterwards? All I have is 220 grit, would that be okay or should I head back to the hardware store?

My bass teacher did the neck of his Bongo. He used fine steel wool and just took the shine off. He seemed to like the result.

I don't think any harm would result as long as you don't sand down to bare wood. If you did I'd expect moisture could be a problem.
