Snobbery in equipment.

I read so much on this site about what is the best for this and that etc. It seems, and i may be wrong and very often are, that unless you have some super dooper and no expense spaired, bass, you are looked upon as a bit of a looser. Know, as i said, i may be wrong. I have changed to the bass after years of playing guitar because i love the bass. I have been and checked out basses in local shops and read reviews on what is and isnt a good bass.

I have bought myself some bodies and necks, plus and old Vantage P bass, and have found i get what i want from these options. I have tried just about every bass on the market, except Sadowsky, and honestly the old Vantage i bought plus the Stellah and Squire kits i put together, make the others feel, well not right. Some of the MIA Fenders, and i loved Fenders, felt not right, nor did the Gibsons, Warwick etc. The only one i did like, but the cost was way too much, was the Allembic, think thats how you spell it.

The question i have been building up to is this, does it really matter if you think a Bass is gig ready or not or the fact it doesnt have some fancy name on it, the guys in my band just love the sound of the things i have built and they are all well established musicians. One brought along his sons, Vintage P bass and i tell you the sound i got from that old Vantage was identical. So i ask again does it matter what you use, as long you can play.

Yo Al...

I've been around here in various guises for a few years now.. and I understand what your saying... Sometimes it sounds like that old Jagger line.. " You cannot be a man if you do not smoke the same cigarettes as me "...
My answer is S**t with that.... Play the bass your comfortable with... build your sounds around that, maybe make some mods... and just enjoy your sound...
I've owned and still own a few basses... one being a 72 Fender Jazz Bass which is in storage at my mum's place, It is a nice bass to play but has never seen the light of day in over 5 years... (It's part of my retirement fund now..) but to me my Squire Beater Jazz sounds quite nice too....
But the bass I'm getting the most pleasure with is a humble EBO... fitted with ancient well used flats, it gives me the Muddy dead sound I love.....(The fact that I sometimes dress it in a little black dress and call it Alice has nothing to do with it !)...
I reckon Bo has nailed it well with his rant... so thats it from me...

Just enjoy what you play....... and never admit wearing Spandex on here....

That is all......

Hey Al. Don't think you'll find much "gear snobbery" here at AB. Here's my take on the subject - if it's working for you and it's sounds good, roll with it.

I own a few basses ranging in price from a $250 Jazz (purchased new back in the early 80's on sale) to a high end Roscoe. The ONLY reason I got the high ender is because I test drove one while browsing at a music store in Atlanta .back in the late 90's .... and was blown away by the way it played - and it's sound. I'd never heard of the brand until then. I didn't set out to "one up" fellow bassists or otherwise prove anything. I'd like to think that owning that instrument hasn't changed me into an uppity musician (like some on this certain other bass site). I don't "flaunt" it when I'm gigging with it - that aint the way I roll. I just play :)

At the end of the day, my basses are all made from similar materials with some similarities in construction. That being said - there IS a difference between the playbility and sound of my cheap Japan made Jazz and the Roscoe. A big difference.
