Business Travel and Boredom

It's only two nights a week but the nights I'm home I get home late; sometimes not until near dark (even with summer light). It seems like I'm always gone and I get extremely bored in my hotel. I'll check the TV but it's usually crap. I watch YouTube on me phone and surf here and TB. I might even browse FB from time to time.

But all that gets old. I do some paperwork but that doesn't take much time. I eat dinner but since I eat alone, well, you get it. I wish I could bring my bass and play through phones but the temps on my truck (no A/C) probably reach the 100°F mark this time of year. I don't feel comfortable taking my bass in the truck for that reason.

I wish I was the type who could sleep about ten hours straight but I'm not. I'm out of ideas. I suppose reading couldn't hurt but when I like a book I can't put it down. I'm afraid I'll spend half a night reading and only get an hour nap before my alarm wakes me at 3am.

Suggestions please? Thanks.

OH HELL NO! I got a line about that in a new original we are working on for the next CD:

"You said you'd love me forever now did you forget,
Meeting you is my one regret,
There's one thing that I finally see,
You're poison in the air I breath,
You push the thin line between love and hate,
You make me wish that I had masturbated,
I replaced your love with alcohol,
Now I just don't seem to care at all,

Jubilee Day was great! I don't really remember walking home, but I woke up there so I guess I did all right.....hehehehe! I think everyone was pretty staggered but we didn't go there to stay sober.

The new Steel CD is going to be a while yet. I'm still laying down roght tracks for the guys. Aaron has been writing more which is a two edged sword. Some of the stuff he writes is good. Some, well not so much. Sometimes I think he writes a song just to write a song. He wrote this one with really good hooks. I'm sure it will be a well liked song. I like it! But, the next one he wrote I really don't even want to play. It's just not very good. We'll see how it all pans out.

It sounds like something I would say. I try to encourage musicians to write songs. Writing songs will teach you more about music than just about anything. You have to think about every aspect of the song. Tempo, timing, rhythm, melody, harmony, etc. Writing teaches much! However, as a veteran song writing you need to start weeding out some of the sub par songs before you bring them to the band. The idea isn't to fill a CD. It's to fill a CD with something your proud to share. I don't just throw a song together, or it is very rare that it happens that way. Some songs I will work on for years. Whereas Aaron will throw one together in a night. Which is fine when it works. But, when it doesn't he needs to learn to just let that one fade away. I wrote a song right after the last CD that we started learning. But, I just let it fall to the way side because I had better songs that I was working on. I have songs written that won't appear on the CD because the idea for me anyway is to put your best songs forward.

It would be great if you made another Jubilee Day appearance. Brian and I do talk about coming up but it's just so damn hard for both of us to get away. There is no way in Hell I'm doing what we did last time. That about killed both of us....LOL!

LMAO! Well Jaquie should be plenty healed then by the next time we get together and drink. When we come up again we are going to take more time. We are going to split the drive time into two days up and two days down. That was just craziness leaving Thursday and being back Monday! We're just too damn old for that Eddie!

Songwriting is one of my favorite things about music. It's one of the things that keeps me doing it. I'm sure one day will come when I won't gig anymore but I will ALWAYS write.

It's like anything Gerry, the more you do it the better you get at it. I don't think it's hard but knowing some theory is EXTREMELY helpful. To me there is not a right way or wrong way to write a song with bass. This is how I do it, but everyone needs to find what works for them. What I do is make a rough draft of the song on four track cassette. Then I give a copy of it to the band. This video is a song that I gave to the band. I do all the phrasing and keying of the vocals and do the harmonies the way I want them. I must warn you though that I am a horrible HORIBLE singer!! But, what you need to understand is I wasn't trying to do a wonderful pristine vocal track... or bass track for that matter. It's just a rough cut so the band can learn the song. So, you'll have to hear past the little flaws, or in the case of my vocals BIG flaws. But, I went through the song and added what my thought process is when taking a song to the band. I must also warn you that this song has a lot of cursing in it. But, it's nothing you wouldn't hear on Prime Time American Television. Well here it is... you've been warned.

Was that helpful at all?

Dave

Thanks, Dave! I think it was helpful, though I'll have to listen to it several more times. My theory is very basic.

So you worked out the chordal relationships on the bass? If so, does it take a bit more knowledge of theory to do so than writing with a guitar or keys?

"So you worked out the chordal relationships on the bass? " Yes, but that is not all that difficult to do. I started writing songs on piano at times. But, I find it easier to write on bass as I have been playing bass over three decades so I just know it better. But let me start with a few questions:

Do you know your modes?
Do you know what inversions are?

I do know my modes, though I'm not fluent in all of them, such as Phrygian, Locrian, to cite two. I'm most familiar with with Major and Minor, of course, and then Mixolydian and I like Dorian for some reason.

By inversion, I assume you mean chord inversions where instead of I, III, V, you might play I V III or V I III? I'm somewhat familiar with it, but not sure I truly understand the whys and whens of it.
