Strings make all the difference. Cheap-expensive...nickel-steel

I've always had good basses, but will admit that I've been kinda cheap when it came to strings, usually favoring d'addario xl's or slinkys. After having upgraded my p bass I wasn't into the tone...the XL's weren't matching up to the EMG PX pickups. Today I added a set of DR low rider steel rounds that were $5 more for the set, and they sound amazing...it sounds phenomenal now. The reason I decided to try them is because I also happen to like the Smith steel rounds on my Jazz, and was really enjoying the growl.

I know some people complain about steel rounds being rough on fingers, but my hands are all calloused and beat up from lifting weights, so no issues there.

I wouldn't exactly call XL's "cheap" in the sense of quality. They've been around forever and I've used them since I can remember (used Chromes once; I got over it). I've also used DR, Dean Markley Blues (love 'em, just too pricey for what they do).

The XL's aren't overly bright and give me the sound I like; especially when broken in. I get about four months out of every set and I play every week plus about four-five hours of practice/noodling at home. I'm very happy and see no reason to switch.

The price point on XL's makes far more sense when they do exactly what I need them to do. Steels make sense for anyone that needs that super bright sound (I'm thinking Mike Dirnt, Marcus Miller, and guys whose styles rely on very bright strings). But for me steels seem a waste of cash when I don't need that much treble sizzle.

IMO, YMMV and all that.

Not cheap in the literal sense...cheap as in affordable, and always available. I used to prefer nickels but here lately prefer the bright growl. I'm now turning the highs down on my head when playing classic rock, and keep it even when playing punk.

They are really nice. The natural unfinished 4 string I played a couple of months ago was the best Ibby I've ever played. The Bart's were nice too..bit of a compressed scooped sound if I remember correctly.

Yeah, this one sounds great. I've been talking to another guy on FB about an EX Ibanez bass. It has the headstock like the guitars have with the classic Ibanez body style. Like this...

The BTB...

If I can convince the love of my life to part with a small bit of our fortune I'd rather have the BTB.

That BTB looks like a factory reject. Someone screwed up and put on an extra string. You just can't get good help these days.

Is the btb better than your Spector?

Ibanez EX bass thread hijack. Do not adjust your set.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case. Dude seems to be fond of the bass but I'd rather have the BTB, I think. It would probably look better on me anyway.
