I learned forty songs in two weeks for Hard Country. But you're right, I've bitten off too much a couple of times myself. So, tell about the gig.

oh that was smart !!!

Now that I've taken a moment to reflect, it's actually very do-able. It's a roots/outlaw country gig - lots of Waylon and the like - so, simple bass lines and lots of I IV V repeat progressions. Some southern rock. Some Red Dirt. But mostly the sorts of tunes that, so long as I don't overplay, they'll be fine. There are only maybe 10 songs that have bass lines I'll need to nail. Gimme 3 Steps, the country version of Shakey Ground, etc. - those sorts of tunes plus a couple of contemporary country tunes.

OMG...that would never happen for me. I'd say 10-15 in a weeks time, if I'm at least familiar with the song. I just don't have the discipline, unless it was a band I really wanted to become a member of.

Report Back: Did 2 gigs. One Saturday afternoon at an outdoor festival in a little town in North Texas. Cool little town. Very hot day. The band members were phenominal. Good musicians and good people. My contribution was more than a little rough -- but as we played more, it got better. It turns out that the set list I had was only a suggestion. Ha! There's no whining in bass playing though. Fortunately most of the tunes not on the list were standards, so it wasn't that bad. Probably all of them were standards and I just didn't recognize them as such. Ha!
Then, pack it up and drive 100 miles to the Saturday night gig in East Texas. Nice stage. Good house system. Cute bartendress. Good experience. Plus! Bonus! A rotund old cowboy who could do the Robot out on the dance floor! The gig was substantially smoother from my end (but certainly not glitch free). And, as is always the case, the more we played, the easier it got to figure out what everyone else was doing. All in all, an excellent experience. And it's always a pleasure to play with good folks. Plus I learned a few new things.
