If you're after something really easy to use that will put together a quick demo for you - the sequencer that comes with M-Audio sound cards is pretty good, although it has it's limitations.

Technically not free, but very cheap and with an unlimited and unrestricted trial (basically you only have to pay the license fee to stop the please pay the license fee box coming up for 5 seconds when you launch the program) is REAPER. Personally, I think it's as good as ProTools.

I'll second MoKu...Audacity.
