I wrote a ballad for Steel on piano. So, I figured one ballad is all I'm going to get out of this band. In the meantime I was working on another ballad on my piano. My daughter writes lyrics and is trying to put together a CD. I told her she could use this music I was working on. As I was putting the song together I REALLY started liking it. So, I was going to put lyrics to it and include it on the next Steel CD along with the ballad (It Just Rains) that I already have written. I'm getting a little resistance from the band though. This is a condenced version of what it would be for Steel. This is just a rough draft I did on cassette four track so don't expect the greatest quality. It could also use a remix, but we'll see if I feel like mixing it again. But here it is:
I think it's a pretty song and worth including on the CD even though I already have "It Just Rains". Now the bass will be different I'm sure. I just strapped it on and ran through it. But, you get the basic idea of the song.
What do you think? And don't sugar coat it just be straight with me if you would be so kind.
The right hand is the counter-melody. I was working the melody around a "D" but that was a little low for my daughter. So, in her version we are working it around G. It goes back and forth a bit between G & F#. The vocal melody has some movenment in it, but it sounds good sticking pretty close to the G while the piano has the movement underneath it.
It will have lyrics for sure. The one I already wrote we are playing out live now. Our singer drills it!.... well, when he remembers the words and I don't have to step in and sing them he drills it that is.
Dave, to be honest I love the piano melody. But i feel the bass lines are clashing with the piano at times. I would try a more straight bass line and let the piano shine. I know it's boring, but what serves the song better? Just my opinion. Don
I would agree with that at times. But, like I said the bass will be different I'm sure. I ran through it maybe a handful of times with the bass and got a usable sound and a basic idea. Then I just hit the record and ran through it in one take. I appreciate your cander though.
This recording was for my daughters verion which I was really rushed on. When I lay down the rough tracks for Steel then I will have the bass down. That's what I had to start doing.... laying down rough tracks with bass and vocals. One song I gave them had piano and one I played a banjo on. But, mostly they are bass and vocals including the harmonies. Then I burn a copy for them. If I didn't do that I don't think we would ever get an original learned.
