Am I a Bridge, Or a Crutch?

Months ago I helped a friend of mines band out. Their bass player quit and I learned their set and filled in a gig. I told them I would help them out until they found another bass player. Its like coming to a river when you lose a musician. It sure would be easier to get to the other side if you just had a bridge. Which is exactly what I was trying to do for these guys. Be a bridge and get them across the river to another bass player. Losing a musician can be tough on a band. A lot of bands will fall apart trying to find a replacement. I thought that I could help keep their band from falling apart by filling in. That way they could still have band practice with a full band and play gigs. But, I think these guys have stalled out on the bridge. They dont really seem to be looking for another bass player. They only auditioned one guy since I came into the band. That guy had no chance because of his age (he was only seventeen). Although he was quite talented for his age. But, now Im starting to wonder if maybe instead a positive thing being a bridge that maybe Im a negative thing being a crutch. If they didnt have anyone they would be looking a lot harder than they are. We were at band practice the one day and the guitarist said he was going to line up an audition with another young guy. And the drummer replied we already have our bass player. I dont think they want to let me go! There is a part of me that doesnt want to be let go. However, doing two bands is just too much for me. Im trying to write the next Steel CD and at times I have to push that back to learn some covers for F5 (the other band Im playing with). They are talented guys and the band is getting tighter both on and off stage. I dont know if Im doing a good thing here or a bad thing.

Sunday no band practice for me. F5 is going to audition bass players. I hope they find someone but it also makes me a bit sad in a way. I kind of got attached to these guys. We did a gig a few weeks back. We opened for Kix. It was a killer gig. It was a big club and the place was packed! It has a floor above the stage too with a balcony running around it so there were people looking down on the stage too. I was looking up at the people and I thought this is just too much to focus on. So, I just stayed focused on the sea of people in front of me. It was fun and the band was on. I was playing like my neck was on fire! I'm going to miss playing with these guys. But, I know I have to go.

Glad you had fun at a great gig. I remember Kix. One of the last of the breed, if I recall. I'm glad you got that sorted out and I hope F5 lands on their feet with a solid bassist.

Well done, sir.

Are you making a little money with F5 as well, or have you only been opening. Still cool to have played with Kix though. I'm almost positive I saw them at a place called Steeltown in Maryland back in like 1993...but I was pretty f'd up since those were my heavy drinking days.

They're just doing openenings right now. They don't have enough material to play a whole night. They have had some musician set backs. Original singer moved to Cali, drummer quit a while back, and now bass player left. They have a good combination right now. All good guys and very talented. They just need to find a bass player... other than me that is.

Norman is a story of its own...LOL! I went to practice and asked if the had auditioned Norm. The drummer Paulie said "Norm is out" Norm stopped by my friends music store and gave him a card. Turns out Norm is a cross dresser, or tranny take your pick. Norm asked my friend if he cared what he wore on stage...LOL! I guess they draw the line at cross dressers.

Well, to each their own. But, I can't help but
imagine this big guy in a dress saying with that
husky Jim Carrey cross-dresser voice from years
ago:

"Hi, I'm Norma." :)

(I used to work a club where there was a cross-
dresser club right around the corner that closed
early. As soon as it closed, they would all come
into the place I was working. It was a bit of a
shocker the first time, but after that it was not
a big deal. They were all nice, er, guys, and
never caused a bit of trouble.)

Yeah one of my customers owns a gay/lesbian/swingers club so it's old hat to me. I can't say they don't cause any trouble though. They just had an incident down there on New Years Eve. Big fight, police, pepper spray. They have had several huge fights. Not just a couple people it's a mob. The LCB here refused to renew their license. A court over turned it but they may lose it anyway.
