The so-called wall of sound is exactly what most metal bands go for now. Takes 3 guitars to get one riff right apparently.
The bands that stand out now are the ones that do exactly what we're talking about, although none of that means the basslines have to be simplified, they just need to be written with the bass in mind.
Obscura are a great example (fretless bass going completely mental but with great tone and an independent line there is space for within the song, kinda like mid-era Death).
You're totally right about tone by the way, and it's a simple matter of acoustics. Low notes have a longer wavelength, so they take longer to get to your ear. If the bassline goes too fast, there's no chance for the note to swell, and you end up really muddying the sound.
Getting back to my original point though, none of this is to say that there aren't fast low parts in basslines (to an extent at least) that can sound great. What is tricky is getting that tone right. I'm not the only one who has taken to hitting hard enough to always get a click from the end of my fretboard adding to my attack. The guy from Cannibal Corpse does the same, perhaps even to a greater extent. You can hear his really interesting and unique tone really clearly in any of his work with Blotted Science.
