It's my favorite time of year...

No, not Christmas. It's the new Band in a Box release date.

Now I know most of you are in bands or have friends to jam with but, for those of us who don't, BiaB is the next best thing. So the new release is like joining a new band with some great new musicians.

Computer generated music has come a long way since I first used a PC to jam with. On my home page you can listen to some early midi based tunes which were good but you can tell it's PC generated.

Here's my latest recording for comparison. It's an uptempo sort of Reggae tune with some Calypso leanings. I'm playing the bass but everything else is BiaB.

Reggae Jam

I'm curious as to your opinions regarding the mix. I think it's a lot better than some of the older ones I've done. The reason is my new amp has a post preamp line out so I can record the actual amp sound. (Dave Magero: I'd especially like to hear from you if possible. You're familiar with the recordings we did over at BassPlaying.com)

Comments on the bass playing are also welcome as long as it's not just 'You Suck'. I already know that. hahaha

Thanks Leroy. I don't think anyone could tell that was computer generated anymore. It's amazing how far the technology has come. It really feels like I'm jamming with some great musicians.

It's good Paul! The bass worked well with the kick drum and sat really nice in the mix. The drums sound like they are at the correct level. I could hear vocals in the song at about the same level so that's where they sould be. My ears really weren't wanting to hear anything. You know if I hear something I would tell you. Nice groove with the bass too. The bass line fit the song. Well done! You know I miss that bassplaying.com when everyone would put a bass line to a jam. I used to love hearing all the different things guys put to them. It was fun just listening to them.

Great, thanks Dave. Your experience with mixing really helped me learn. The most important tip was that one about avoiding conflict between the bass and kick drum.

In this tune I didn't have to clear space for the kick. I think it's because I played the bass line opposite the kick and kept it stacatto.

You know I miss that bassplaying.com when everyone would put a bass line to a jam. I used to love hearing all the different things guys put to them. It was fun just listening to them.

I miss that too. I learned a lot listening to what other players would do in the same piece of music. Also the different genres really expanded my playing abilities, minimal as they are. lol

That BassIAB idea could work here too. I have space to host a backing track every so often. Maybe one day I'll make a post to see if anyone else is interested. We'll see.

Yeah, that seemed to be the case. You need a minimum number of people to participate or it doesn't work.

Thanks Clifton. I really did have fun with this one. I like Reggae to start with and I found the bass line kind of came naturally. It really got me head bopping and toe tapping.

I'm thinking about getting Band In A Box! I had no idea that a NEW one was about to be released!!

PGMusic release a major upgrade every year end in time for Christmas. They also release a free mid year upgrade. I'm addicted and get both every year.

The program is so good now it's nothing short of amazing.

It can still use midi which is fully controllable at the individual note level but only sounds as good as the midi synths you have available.

The RealTracks sound real because they are actually real musicians. The only thing is they'll play what you want at the phrase level. ie: they'll follow the chords you want. However you can't control the actual notes they might use.

Using both in combination allows you to create backing tracks that are as good as you could create with a live band. Since it's Christmas maybe you can treat yourself? hahaha

PGMusic offer an unconditional 30 day money back guarantee. If you don't like it send it back for a refund no questions asked (return shipping not covered).

I always suggest getting the UltraPlus Pak since it includes all the RealTracks (around 800 now) and all the styles. The everything Pak is the same but inculdes a few things like lesson sets and video tutorials. I don't use those so UltraPlus for me.

If Money is an issue then another way is to get started with the MegaPak and upgrade later. However, it's my experience that when you hear what the program can do you'll regret not having the UltraPlus.

There are some great resources for PiaB on the net. My BiaB wiki page. The PGMusic forums. And many others.

Cool. Santa knows how to make a bass player heppy. If you need any tips or other help you can pm me or check out the forums at pgmusic.com, the people are really helpful.

After installation I find the best way to get started is to listen to the various demo songs. If you click on the 'style' button, to the left side of the screen, you can browse the available styles. Go for the RealStyles first. If you see one you'd like to try click 'load demo song'. Then close the style picker and play the song.

To mute the bass, so you can play along, right click the 'bass' radio button (also called a track) to the top left of the screen. Select mute from the drop down menu.

Anyway, don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have. I'm happy to help. And, above all, enjoy.
