Is AB dying......discuss

Having been less active on here for a while and just popping in and out for a looksee now and again my perception is that there is much less activity on here and has been for a while.

Is this perception or is there less activity, I assume there's a way of finding out.

If the posting count is less, why?

Nipple gate fiasco of last year
People leaving for various personal disagreements
Running out of this to say
Found another site
Focus elsewhere
The credit crunch (blamed for everything else)
Other

For me the fun was taken out of it last year after Nipple gate (don't want to open that topic again) and never seemed to recover. I've not had any major disagreements with anyone in particular (from my side anyway) and this site has been very positive for me both personally and from a bass playing perspective, but it's not quite the old AB IMHO.

Am I wrong? I hope so!

Remember first and foremost that Wholenote and AB were graduate school projects for their creators. Also, as was discovered later, the forum interactions were the source for further sociological studies (it's buried in Fretbuzz somewhere).

Mission accomplished. Anything else is gravy.

What WN/AB will ALWAYS have that sets them apart from every other music and/or social site is the ability to create interactive music lessons.

I guess the search bots that find our lessons count as lesson hits, but my lessons have had a consistent amount of use over the years, and I still get lesson feedback. Over 234,000 hits in the 10 years or so (!) since I walked into this coffeehouse.

I think we all evolve in different ways, and perhaps many of us looked around and realize that MAYBE we were sending too much time on the computer and/or Internet.

My personal life has certainly evolved as well, and this year especially with a daughter getting married, husband retiring from teaching, father getting frail enough to need nursing home care; on top of full-time job that requires weekends once a month ... all this certainly cuts into my time available for interacting here.

I came here as a brand-new bass player fresh from Victor Wooten's first Bass/Nature camp in 2000. Now I consider myself a working musician with a day job. Main gig is the folk/rock band Pelican Railroad, but also took up the upright bass along the way, and am back to my classical roots by playing in the regional orchestra. So my posting time has been replaced by practice/rehearsal/gig time.

Mission accomplished. Again.

p.s. I will still come here when I have a bass-related or music question and know that I will get a good answer . . . eventually! :)

Yo Roger..

It was a master stroke... you created a version of AB where you could express yourself freely without the fear of being removed from good old AB...

I'm pleased with both.....

Good to see you too Paul. I can't believe how quick the site is...very nice. I may have to start some "Bass Picture" and "New Bass" or "modded bass threads." Things have been great, I do have a couple of newer basses, that I acquired after I stopped frequenting AB.

How've you been?

It's very nice to have the sight running at a great speed. I was even inspired and updated my HP. I still need some pictures though...I was using myspace to host my pictures, and have since shut my myspace account.

It's a big improvement for sure.

I'll keep a look out. I always loved your 'new bass' threads.

How've you been?

Really good but busy as always. There's never enough time to do everything I want. I have finally found my dream bass. An Ibanez SR500. Not only that but I got a new amp that complements it beautifully. Now I just need to learn to play. lol

Well, I'll get a couple of pictures together later on tonight.

But hey....I'm so glad I went to see if you still had your HP up to date, and there out of the blue is your Gretsch bass!! When I went to pick up my bass from my repair guy yesterday afternoon, he had a Committee bass just like yours. It was in great shape, but neither one of us knew what it was outside of the obvious...it was a Gretsch. Unfortunately, he didn't have his bass amp with him, so I couldn't hear what it sounded like. In any case, I just emailed him the information I got from your HP.

Thanks.

Far out. There weren't that many of them made. The 'committee' was made, if I remember right, from late '78 to early '81. Based on serial numbers I estimate there were no more than 2000 made. Even fewer seem to have survived.

Early ones didn't have the BadAss bridge and had clear pickguards.

They seem to sell for around $799 in mint condition. I paid $599 for mine new in 1981. So I can't retire yet. lol

Sorry, that's what I meant, BadAss II.

Well the old adage that something is worth what you get is probably true. I wouldn't consider that to be too much if I really wanted one. They are really well built from the best materials after all. They compare favorably to boutique basses.

If you get a chance later, give it a try. They do sound good. The biggest drawback is how heavy they are and the neck is really thick. It does have a tendancy to neck dive.

You did that and lots of people signed up. AB had issues and will again. I agree with Mo. I like AB and the way the forum works. I don't care that it's outdated and old school. I don't care if it is like a Starbuck's--which is really expensive and has coffee so I don't get the reference--and I don't care who comes and goes (with the obvious few exceptions).

HOWEVER...

When the site is down, the ABFB is a solid alternative. This site never gets updated unless we snivel a bit; so what, it's free and we don't get get our information sold wholesale to mass marketers.

Well, like Ma said, it was a social experiment and I'd say it's a successful one. I'm with Leroy, I like both. I just go where the action is.

If AB breaks, I'll do like Mo said. I'll bombard Jim Burger with polite requests to have site issues looked into. If it takes time then so be it. ABFB is, as I said, a solid alternative.

More, yes, more. This site will always be special because I got to meet Mo and Garry in person. My friendship with Garry grew to him showing up at my gigs. You know that you and I have a history of shooting emails back and forth on a regular basis. Hell, the only thing we haven't discussed to date is our bowel movements (let's hope it never goes there), but we've become correspondents and I like having that. It's all because of AB. All of it. I have some friends in Oz, Kiwiland, Canada, Maryland, and other foreign countries; all people who I think would put me up for a few nights to get over a tough spot and probably even buy me a Heineken should I ever be in their neck of the woods.

This is a damn fine community and I'm damn proud to be a part of it.
