i need a low wattage tube amp i think...

my problem is, when im at band practice i think my
bass rig is to powerfull for the band.

im running:

*either a Ampeg svt2 non pro @300watts tube or a
mesa/boogie 400+ @400watts tube.

*Ampeg pr cab 600watts, or Ampeg classic cab
500watts

* all my basses are active and have really hot
pickups.

i dont feel that im pushing the tubes hard enough
to get that killer tone, and the only way i think
my rigg sounds good is if its cranked. if i do
crank the amps, then im way to loud for the band.
it almost sounds like im clanking around on the
bass with out amplification but im loud. no tube
growl in the tone.

so my questions are:

* do i have to dole out cash for a lower wattage
tube head? and if so, is there any tube amp
comparable to a svt at lower wattage?

* could i use a lower wattage cab to push the
speakers better so i sound louder at a lower
volume?

* am i just not EQing my amps right?

the volume knob on the mesa is barely on 2, and on
the ampeg is about 3 and my rig is still to loud.

my guitar player plays on a peavey 5150 and mesa
king cab.
thanks for your help

I play passive basses. I find them less aggressive. You could EQ different or try Chromes XL strings. If your not a slapper they may help. I would EQ both amp and basses flat and start by bringing them up slowly amp first then bass.If you have a passive option on your basses try that also. Good Luck! Don ps your amps are fine, you don't need different amps.

The reason it sounds "good" ( i assume you mean more
tubish ) when it's cranked, has more to do with ear
fatigue than it does "pushing the tubes"

so does that mean i can push tubes hard at a low
volume and still get the same tone effect vs the amp
being cranked?

Hi Jason;

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT THE
ANIMAL I'VE PICTURED HERE
IS A GUITAR AMP (By Vox)! ! !

However ...
If you look at the lower left
you'll see a selector switch
with (4) positions from which
to choose.

This allows one to 'crank the
most tubage gain', and yet
manage the output volume by
way of the master volume knob.

Keep the rig you have. You can always turn down volume on an amp, but active electronics on hot pickups are like a child with ADD and hyperactivity. It is harder to reign in. Either get rid of the hot pickups or go to passive.

my bass does have a passive switch and i tried that.
its a little better. thanks:^) not as full though.
but it may do for now until i figure something out
with my rigg configuration.

Tube saturation there is no substitute. As you push your amp harder your tubes become saturated and start to distort. Not all distortion is bad distortion in the world of analog. Tubes fall into this category so does tape. Maybe things would be different if we were listening to everything through perfect listening devices. We however were born with ears. So your problem is simple you need tube saturation at a lower volume. What you need is an attenuator or a dummy load on your amp. Before you go into your speaker cab you go into a dummy load. You can buy attenuators or you can make one out of a bank of resistors. It will act something like a master volume for you. You will be able to drive the tubes into saturation without driving your band crazy with extreme volume. Then you will be able to get that nice tone without the volume.

hmmm, sounds pretty cool, i never heard of that. im
gonna look into getting one of those attenuator
thingies being that it sounds like it would be my
cheapest option at this point! thanks dave!

ahhhhh! scratch that idea, the guy on craigslist
told me i need one that can handle a 4ohm bass head
and cab and that they dont make attenuators for 300
and 400 watt tube amps. darn it!!!

I'm sure it can be done. Talk to these guys who work on gear. Those guys will have an answer I'm sure. They make a ton of them for guitars. I can go out into my shop and make a lethal weapon out of some diodes in about 10 minutes... I'm pretty sure this would be doable.

The other thing some guys do is change the tubes lowering the volume. But, you will change the sound. You're probably pretty happy with the tone you get just the volume problem. But, that is another option.
