Anorexia Nervosa

How do you get someone who has it to eat? I read all about it. Cause, symtoms both mental and physical, etc. but the one question no one really answers is how do you get them to eat?

I'm not sure. But, if you do get them to eat, then the next challenge is to have them digest it instead of putting their finger down their throat to throw it back up. My youngest son and I were watching a show about that famous French model (Isabelle Caro) that had this and actively campaigned against the modeling industry pressure to keep models nearly skeletal. Unfortunately, she died from a lung infection that her body couldn't fight due to anorexia.

I see no evidence of Bulimia or purging.

I think those super thin models look sickly to me. They're like twigs.

I don;t have any experience with this but I am betting that getting the person to eat is the same as getting person to stop drinking. First there has to be sdmission of their condition and next the will to overcome the addiction.

Sorry, that's all I can add really.

Seems like drinking is part of the problem. Almost like she is replacing food with beer.

Beer is liquid bread but we cannot live by bread alone. Eating disorders are serious issues with no real amateur treatment, they are like addictions just in reverse.

She is under professional care. Last night I thought she was going to wack herself just by some of the things she was texting me. Their solution today was to give her chill pills as she calls them. nerve pills I guess. I dont mean to belittle anyones profession but here is how I see shrinks.

Thats an old shuffle alley I fixed. I have a good grasp on how these machines operate and how they fail. I fixed this machine without a schematic. This machine was original factory wiring. Sometimes I get these old machines in that have been modified. Again I can figure them out and get them working. But if I get one of these machines and a bunch of wires are moved and in the wrong place at some point Im not going to be able to fix it. If there are too many wires crossed Im just not going to be able to resolve the issue. This is exactly how I see shrinks. If they get a brain in that is wired OK from factory and just having some problems then they can get it straightened out. But, if too many wires are crossed they dont have a lot of hope. They just get in there and start screwing with something they dont fully understand. When they cant fix it they drug it. Im not real big on shrinks. I REALLY dont like them drugging someone for problems of the mind. If the problem is in the mind then to me it seems the mind should be able to solve the problem. She was down to 86 lbs. and she is average height. They put her on some drug to make her gain weight which she now has. Now she is trying to lose the drug induced weight. Its the way she is trying to lose it that concerns me. Now she started going back to the Gym and working out. Two problems with that: When you work out you have to feed the machine. She doesnt feed the machine. I dont see how she sustains life with what she eats if she just sat on the sofa all week let alone working out. The other problem is she is spending WAY too much time working out. Or is it normal to ride a stationary bike for an hour and a half and then go work out for three or four more hours? Seems excessive to me but maybe Im wrong there. But, what Im not wrong about is her calorie intake. Im not a shrink so Im not arrogant enough to think Im smarter than everyone else and feel I can cure with my superior intellect. I talk to her in depth about this as well. But, at least at the end of my session this armature gets off his a-- and makes her something to eat. I have had limited success with getting her to eat. Hence the question: How do you get them to eat? I am VERY concerned!!!

As usual Dave, your analogy and analysis are bang on.

Machines are logical and predictable, if you do x you can expect y, patterns repeat and results can be replicated.

The human mind is not a machine. Head shrinkers and pharmaceutical companies come up with what they think are solutions and may be able to help some people but can's necessarily replicate their results as no two people are wired exactly the same.

If she's exercising without adequate nourishment the body eventually starts using the protein stored in muscle tissue - this is bad. I wish I had some advice for you but all I can do is offer my prayers for a happy outcome.

I did not know that. That is helpful information thank you! Ive read all kinds of stuff about what it does to the organs. She is not just trying to lose weight she is trying to tone too. But, I'll be sure to let her know that she may lose the muscle that she has worked so hard for if she doesn't start feeding the machine.

I can get her to drink a protein shake. (1/2 a banana, about 2/3 cup of berries, a cup of skim milk, a scoop of protein powder, and some ice) So, I bought her some protein powder to take home with her. I can get her to eat an egg white omelet sometimes too. She just seems less reluctant to eat something she knows is healthy.

Mo is on the right track. It's a mental condition along the same
lines of OCD, in that they have a strong need to not eat, and
when they do they feel guilty.

So, bottom line, I don't know but someone out there does.
Forcing the issue might backfire if they're sensitive to it but
won't come clean. They will probably have to have the realization
of the problem to actively fix it, otherwise they will only
contribute to it more and more. Long term, they need help or at
least admission and support. Short term could be much trickier.

Sorry, of very little help I know but I'll bump it. Hoping for the
best. Maybe someone out there has more experience with it.

While on the topic of Karen Carpenter everytime I hear this Great White song the one part he sings sounds just like her. At 1:00 in the song when he sings "Where no one else will ever be" when he hits the words "will ever be" it sounds just like her. I swear it sounds not only just like her, but also like a melody in one of the Carpenters songs. I just have never been able to figure out which one.
